Funeral services for Ruth Arlene Gitthens, 84, of Chickasha, Okla., will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel.

Ruth Arlene Gitthens was born May 15, 1919, in Chickasha, and died on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, in Chickasha.

Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.

Ruth Arlene [Reed] Gitthens
May 15, 1919 ~ August 28, 2003


Funeral services for Ruth Arlene Gitthens, 84, of Chickasha, will be held Tuesday, September 02, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel.

Ruth Arlene Gitthens was born May 15, 1919, in Chickasha, daughter of Ernest Lee Reed and Martha Angelina Cambell Reed.

She died August 28, 2003, at her home in Chickasha.

Ruth married Sidney Leon Gitthens on November 25, 1942, at her parent's home at the Washita Power Plant.

Ruth grew up in the Friend Community and graduated from Friend School. She attended OCW (now USAO) and graduated from OCW with a major in education. She then began a teaching career, which would span over twenty-five years.

She taught in Friend, Bray and Pioneer. In 1959, she moved to Westminster, California, and taught in the Warner Junior High School. She retired in 1982, and returned to Oklahoma in 1997.

During her active years, Ruth was a member of the Lucille Home Extension Club, Who's Who in American Educators, and the Beta Sigma Phi. While teaching, Ruth sponsored a Pep Club, the Speech and Debate Team at Friends, and the Honor Society in California.

Ruth was a member of Epworth Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by both parents, two sisters, Edna Bounds and Lucille Kennedy, and her husband, 'Buster' on April 1, 1998.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Sidney Leon Gitthens, Jr., and Kasey Gitthens, of Temecula, California; daughter, Suzanne Boxley, of Chickasha; daughter, Debbie Gitthens-Huggins and Guy Huggins of Chickasha; six grandchildren: Kendra South, Autumn and Starla Boxley, Danielle, David and Deanna Gitthens; one sister-in-law, Helen Stowe of Oklahoma City; four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
