Steve Southern
1914 - 2002
Steve Southern, 88, of Amarillo died Wednesday, March 6, 2002.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Memorial Park
Cemetery with the Rev. Marty Hamrick of Polk Street United Methodist Church
officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia
St.
Mr. Southern was born in Pauls Valley, Okla. He married Catherine
Rodgers in Amarillo in 1956. He worked for Sante Fe Railway as a conductor for 41
years, retiring in 1976.
He was an active member of Polk Street United Methodist Church and
belonged to the McDavid Sunday School Class. He was a past master of
Palo Duro Masonic Lodge and the Shriners, where he received many
distinguished awards.
He received the Golden Trowel Award for Exceptional Service from Grand
Lodge of Texas. He was a longtime volunteer with Northwest Texas
Hospital Auxiliary.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Loetta Southern in 1952;
and a son, Thomas Southern in 1974.
Survivors include his wife; a son, John Southern of Amarillo; a sister,
Blanche Woody of Lovington, N.M.; and three grandchildren, Mark Southern of
Santa Barbara, Calif., Stephen Southern of Lubbock and Berkley Collum of
Mesquite.
The family suggests memorials be to Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice,
Olivia's Angels, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176; or Shriner's Burn Hospital,
815 Market St., Galveston, TX 77550-2725.
