(1873 - 1967)
Burial in McGee Cemetery
Obituary - Stratford Star March 2, 1967
Dr. Augustin Henry Shi, a resident of the Stratford community since 1896, died February 26, 1967, in Valley View Hospital, Ada. He was 93 years of age.
Born October 10, 1873 in Georgia, Dr. Shi was married to Bessie Jackson on October 21, 1903. He was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church of Stratford, a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of Stratford Lodge 118, and a lifetime member of the Oklahoma Medical Association.
Dr. Shi first came to McGee from Georgia to start practicing medicine. He had served in this profession continuously for 67 years. He and Miss Jackson were married in the home of her parents in McGee, Indian Territory, and lived at McGee until 1907 when the residents picked up their houses and moved the town to the Santa Fe Railroad. The name of the town was changed to Stratford, Indian Territory. Dr. and Mrs. Shi were on the road two days moving their house two miles from McGee to Stratford. In 1911 they built, and moved into their present home.
Dr. Shi practiced medicine up until his 90th birthday. Medicine was a tradition in his family. His father was a doctor with the Confederate Army during the Civil War, as were two of his uncles.
Survivors are his wife, Bessie Mabel, Stratford; two daughters, Mrs. Josephine Donham of Maysville and Mrs. Dorothy Robertson of Norman; one son Augustin H. Shi, III of Stratford; and nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Interment was in the McGee Cemetery, with arrangements by Stratford Funeral Home.
JOURNAL OF THE OKLAHOMA STATE MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, October, 1948, pg. 430:
At a meeting of the Garvin County Medical Society, a joint presentation was made by Dr. Northcutt. Augustin H. Shi, M.D., was presented a 50-year pin and Robert M. Alexander, Paoli, was presented a life membership in the Oklahoma State Medical Association.
Dr. Shi was born at Forsythe, Ga., October 10, 1873, and moved to Hawthorne, Fla., before coming to McGee, Indian Territory, in 1896. He obtained his degree at Forth Worth University, in 1898, but like many of the physicians of that time, began his practice before receiving his degree. In 1906 the McGee town site was moved and is now the present town of Stratford, Okla., where he has practiced continuously for 52 years. Dr. Shi recalls "early modes of transportation were via horseback and horse and buggy until the appearance of the model T Ford. Then during rainy seasons we reverted to horse and buggy."
Dr. Shi comes from a family of doctors. His father was Augustin Henry Shi, M.D., of Georgia and one of his brothers was the late Pat Shi, M.D., of Blanchard, Okla. Two paternal uncles and three maternal uncles were physicians. Dr. and Mrs. Shi have three children, Mrs. J. C. Donham, Maysville; Mrs. O. C. Robertson, Norman, and A. H. Shi, Jr., Stratford.
Note: Dr. Shi received his lifetime membership pen in 1951.
