Fairmont Man Dies of Wounds in Vietnam War

A Fairmont couple has been notified that their son died March 30 as a result of fragment wounds received while on combat operations against hostile forces in South Vietnam.

The victim is specialist 4 Jesse Murphy, 20, who entered the Army in April 1967. He received training at Fort Bliss, Texas, and at Camp Polk, Louisiana, shipping to Vietnam September 3, 1967.

Murphy was wounded and hospitalized. He returned to duty on November 27, having received the Purple Heart.

He attended parochial school at Fairmont for eight years and graduated from Garber High School in 1965.

Murphy attended Oklahoma State University, Stilly, where he was listed on the Dean's honor roll.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Fairmont.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil A. Murphy, Route One, Fairmont; a brother, Mike of the home, and a grandfather, Fred , Enid.

Services are pending by Henninger – Allen Funeral Home.
