Zion Lutheran Cemetery


A Celebration of Life for Irene (Schweer) Gragert is 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairmont, Oklahoma, with Pastor Mark Blakeman officiating. Burial follows in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8:00 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2018, at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Irene was born January 21, 1923, in a house a few miles northeast of Covington, Oklahoma, to Freddie and Lena Meier Schweer. After living an independent life until her last few days, she passed from this life surrounded by her children on June 3, 2018, in Enid, Oklahoma. Irene married Merton Gragert on June 1, 1941, in St. John's Lutheran Church in Covington, Oklahoma. The couple made their home on a farm southeast of Fairmont, Oklahoma. They moved to a house in Fairmont in June 1951, and raised their family there. They left Fairmont in 1991 and moved to Enid. She retired from Farmers' Coop of Fairmont in 1985 after working there for 23 years. Irene was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Fairmont, where she belonged to the Ladies' Aid and Friendship Circle Group.

She was preceded in death by her husband Merton on August 4, 2004; sisters, Lorene Whiteneck, Darlene Braley; and brother Herold Schweer.

Surviving Irene are her three children: Sandra (Laird) Bartels of Tobias, Nebraska, Bruce (Lynn) Gragert of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Mark (Cindy) Gragert of Wylie, Texas; seven grandchildren: Lisa Cogswell, Gary Bartels, James Bartels, Tiffany Wagner, Megan Gragert, Derek Gragert, and Damon Gragert; 14 great-grandchildren: Blake, Ostynn, McKehna, Conner, Coleman, Josie, Brynley, Grace, Tristan, Tanner, Peyton, Chloe, Gaige and Laeken as well as three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Arnold Schweer and a sister, Esther Mittelstet.

Memorial contributions in Irene's name may be made to Hospice Circle of Love, or to the charity of choice, with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
