OKLAHOMA CITY — A memorial service for Mrs. Rose M. Shaklee, 89, 14901 N. Penn. Ave., Apt. 369, Oklahoma City, who died Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, following a brief illness, will be 10 a.m. today, Dec. 8, 2011, at Brill Chapel, Epworth Villa, with Chaplain Dennis Pendleton officiating. In accordance with the wishes of the deceased, organs were donated for medical purposes. The remains were cremated under the direction of Demuth Funeral Home, Oklahoma City, with interment in Waukomis Cemetery.

Mrs. Shaklee was born July 10, 1922, on a farm west of Enid, the daughter of Lewis B. and Retta (Barge) Miller.

She attended Free Home School and Emerson Junior High School. She graduated from Enid High School in 1939 and from Phillips University in 1943.

Following graduation, she taught at Carrier High School. Then she worked for George E. Failing Co. until her marriage to William E. Shaklee on Feb. 24, 1946, at First Methodist Church, Enid.

They lived in Ames, Iowa, for two years where she taught Freshman English at Iowa State University. After two years in Champaign and Urbana, Ill., they moved to Maryland, where they lived in Riverdale, Eastpines and New Carrollton before returning to Enid in 1976. In August 1992 they moved to Epworth Villa in Oklahoma City.

Mrs. Shaklee was a life-long member of the Methodist Church. She sang in the choir, taught Sunday school classes and participated in the women’s organizations. She served two terms as president of United Methodist Women, first in Lanham, Md., and then in Enid. Her favorite hymns were “Be Still, My Soul,” “O God, Our Help in Ages Past,” and “Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart.”

She was active in civic affairs and in the Parent-Teachers Association. She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Lioness Club, Vernon Extension Homemaker’s Club, Republican Women’s Club, League of Women Voters, Young Women’s Christian Association, and Daughters of the American Revolution.

In Epworth Villa, she was active in the Ceramics Interest Group, sang in the Villa Choir, taught Sunday school classes and was active in Quail Springs United Methodist Women Circle, which met regularly in Epworth Villa.

Survivors include her husband, William of the home; one son, Dr. Ronald V. Shaklee, Youngstown, Ohio; three daughters, Janelle (Mrs. Arnold) Waggoner, Yukon; Lynda (Mrs. David) Harrison, Norman; Dr. Cynthia (Mrs. Jihad) Safa, Dearborn, Mich.; three brothers, Dr. Lester Miller, Goodwell; Dale Miller, Enid; and Dr. Glen Miller, Enid; three sisters, Ruby (Mrs. Jack) McDaniel, Ponca City; Dr. Bonnie Miller, Oklahoma City; and Betty (Mrs. James) Krause, Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren, William V. Shaklee, Jonathan and Martha Waggoner, Jeffrey and Kimberley Burns, and Nabilah and Alia Safa; four great-grandsons, Joshua Berry, Micah Waggoner, Ian Waggoner and Nathan Waggoner; and two great-granddaughters, Sophia Waggoner and Brooke Shaklee.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, an infant daughter and two infant grandsons.

Memorials may be made to Epworth Villa Benevolent Fund, the Flora Deen Martin Care and Study Center, or Quail Springs United Methodist Church for Church World Service.
