Donna Gene GIGOUX

Rose Hill Cemetery

The Mass of Christian burial for Donna Gene Gigoux Payne, 83, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church with Rev. Father Larry Kowalski, celebrant. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Carrier, Okla., next to her beloved aunt, Alma Gigoux. Services are under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.

She was born Nov. 1, 1925, in Enid, Okla., the daughter of Gene and Viola (Ester) Gigoux and passed away on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Greenbrier Nursing Home.

She grew up happily on her parents wheat and dairy farm. She was a 4-H club member for nine years, learning to be an excellent seamstress, gardener and dairy cattle judge. She was top dairy cattle judge in Oklahoma for four years and fifth in the nation for a year. As an adult she became interested in dogs and acquired a great dane show dog. She had many champion great danes and whippets. She raced her whippets for many years. She was president of Great Dane Club of Greater Dallas for several years and also a member of North Texas Whippets Club.

She married Fred T. Payne Jr. March 8, 1947. In 1988 she moved back home to her documented Centennial Farm. Since then she became a farmer again, was an avid quilter and raised longhorn cattle, and was an author of sorts. She was a co-editor of the book "Carrier OK Our Story." Donna Gene authored many articles in the book. It was published in 1991.

She was raised in the Carrier Congregational Church from birth until becoming a Catholic in 2001. She still held the Carrier church close to her heart. She was a talented pianist and organist. She played the organ for Carrier Congregational Church for several years. She was a member of Memorial Wagon Trail and drove her horse and buggy. Horses from birth were a big part of her life. She also was a member of Lahoma Economy Club.

She is survived by her daughters, Gena Watson of Fort Worth, Texas, Sissy Jill Blevins and her husband Randy of North Richland Hills, Texas, Gail Payne of Flower Mound, Texas, Diane Harden of Trophy Club, Texas; one brother, Jere J. Gigoux of Carrier; four grandchildren; and six great-granchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Vonna Rae Gigoux Taylor; and one infant grandson.

Her final thoughts were of her beautiful farm, her daughters and all her family. She was a unique person and sad to leave you all; but "The good Lord willing and the creek don't rise, we will meet again."

Condolences may be made to the family online at www.enidwecare.com.
