Obituary
Michel Owens was born at Holliday's Cove, West Virginia, May 2, 1838. She died at the home of her daughter in Waukomis, Okla., April 1, 1914, at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 24 days.
She was married December 2, 1847, to James Mahan, in West Virginia. To this union were born seven children, five boys and two girls, of whom all are living except the oldest son, Lafayette, who died in a railroad accident 37 years ago, and the youngest daughter, Flora, who died at Marshall three years ago. The surviving children are Frank, who resides in Missouri, and Charles and William, who reside in Florida, and Eldridge who is present. The surviving daughter is Mrs. Clara Smith of Waukomis. The husband died nine years ago next month.
Together with her family she moved from West Virginia to Pennsylvania in 1863. From there they moved to Missouri in 1878, coming from there to Oklahoma in 1905, settling in Garfield county. Soon after their coming here, the husband died and she has since made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Smith.
For nearly 70 years she lived a devoted Christian life, having united with the Christian church at the age of 17 years. She was ever consecrated to her Lord and faithful to her duty.
As a wife she had the rare privilege of passing over a half century with him whom she had chosen as her life companion in her youth. As a mother it was her privilege to see her family grow to manhood and womanhood and take positions of honor in the world.
Besides her children she leaves four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, three brothers, and one sister to mourn her loss.
Her last illness was brief, covering a period of only two weeks. She suffered intensely however, and seemed aware of the approaching end. She was conscious to the last breath. She gave instructions as to her burial, and expressed not only a willingness but an anxiety to go.
Funeral services were conducted at the Christian church Thursday afternoon, by Rev. A.G. Smith of Enid. The body was taken to Breckenridge on Friday, and laid to rest beside that of her husband.
She had a large number of friends who mourn her departure and sympathize with the family in their bereavement.
