Lowell T. Sawyer

Lowell T. (Tom) Sawyer, long-time Enid attorney, age 87, died April 23, 2006.

Mr. Sawyer was born March 6, 1919, in Topeka, Kan., the only child of George A. and Lillian T. Sawyer. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1937, and shortly thereafter was employed by the U.S. Forest Service in Kinsley, Kan., supervising the planting of shelterbelts in Western Kansas where he met Gerry Thompson. They were married Jan. 29, 1941, and lived in Altus where he was employed by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service until World War II began.

Mr. Sawyer enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served as a Yeoman First Class in San Francisco and in the South Pacific on the large aircraft carrier, U.S.S. HANCOCK. Upon discharge he enrolled in the University of Oklahoma where he obtained both a BS degree in business and an LLB degree in law, graduating in 1950. He has been licensed by Oklahoma to practice as a lawyer and as a certified public accountant. Will T. Wright was his partner for more than 35 years. They practiced law in the fields of taxation, business, and estate planning.

Mr. Sawyer has been active in professional, civic, and religious affairs. In early years he served as committee chairman and officer in both the Oklahoma Bar Association and the Oklahoma Society of CPA’s. His technical articles have been published in the Oklahoma Bar Journal and he has spoken at various technical seminars. He has served as a director and committee chairman of the Greater Enid Chamber of Commerce, and was active for many years as one of its ambassadors. Mr. Sawyer was a deeply religious man and first was a long-time member of the Methodist Church and in later years a member of Central Assembly of God Church. At the time of his death he was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, of which he had been a charter member. He served all his churches in many different capacities. He also was a 50-year member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, Enid Lions Club, and the Enid Chamber of Commerce. He supported many other worthwhile organizations. He was a private pilot and enjoyed aviation as his hobby.

He is survived by his son, Lowell “Tommy” Sawyer Jr. of Enid; his “like a son,” Feraidoon Raafat of San Diego, Calif.; his cousin, Sallie Chapman of Overland Park, Kan.; and his companion of recent years, Jeanette Martin.

His wife, Gerry, of more than 60 years, predeceased him in 2001.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Golden Oaks Chapel with Golden Oaks Chaplain, Shorty Unruh, officiating. Final interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the U.S. Navy.

Memorials may be tendered to Golden Oaks Chapel or Hospice Circle of Love with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodian of the fund.
