Funeral services for Virgil E. Mehlig, 82, Beatrice, Nebraska, formerly of Enid, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, in the Brown-Cummings Funeral Home Chapel with pastor Ted Kuschel officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. He died at the Beatrice Community Hospital on Monday evening, Dec. 8, 2008. He was born on Oct. 10, 1926, at Lincoln, Neb., and then served in the United States Navy during World War II, where he was a Pharmacist's Mate aboard the U.S.S. Blackhawk in the Pacific Theatre. After his discharge, he attended Central Christian College of McPherson, Kansas and Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma, where he received his B.A. in business.

On Aug. 3, 1947, he married Alice Dickerson in Piedmont, Oklahoma. They lived in Enid where he worked for Sears as a service department manager and then worked for the Employment Securities Commission for the State of Oklahoma in Enid, Okmulgee and Ponca City, retiring in 1988. After Alice's death in 1990, he married Doris Klaaren Lewis on Aug. 31, 1991, in St. Joseph, Missouri. He attended Christ Community Church of Beatrice. He was a former member of the Free Methodist Church of Enid, Oklahoma, where he served as Sunday School superintendent and had been on the church board. He was a member of Kiwanis Club and the Lion's Club, both of Enid, Oklahoma, the American Legion of Ponca City, Oklahoma, and the Kiwanis Club of Beatrice. He enjoyed gardening and listening to Southern Gospel music.

Survivors include his wife, Doris of Beatrice; three sons, Dwight Mehlig and wife Peggy, Rodney Mehlig and wife Linda, all of Enid, OK, and Mark Mehlig and wife Suzi of St. Louis, MO; four grandchildren, Desiree Morse and husband Barry, Kristina McWhorter and husband James, Sarah and Alicia Mehlig; four great-grandchildren; three step-children, Kari Licht and husband Greg of Beatrice, Michael Lewis and wife Sandy of Overland Park, KS, and Kirsten Timchak and husband John of Kearney, MO; seven step-grandchildren; two sisters, Merelyn Sale and husband Melvin and Joann Sale and husband Robert, all of St. Joseph, MO

He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Mildred Westbrook Mehlig, and his first wife, Alice, who died in 1990.
