Funeral for Dr. John A. McIntyre, of Enid, will be 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at Brown-Cummings Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roy Schneider officiating. Private burial to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. John was born Oct. 5, 1916, on a farm north of Tryon, Okla., the son of Lula Hall McIntyre and Eugene Douglas McIntyre and died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, at Golden Oaks Nursing Home.

He was raised in Tryon and graduated from Tryon High School in 1934. He attended Central State University in Edmond, where he received a bachelor of science. After graduation in 1938, he taught science in Marlowe, Okla. He married Catherine Defenbaugh Jan. 27, 1939.

He started medical school at the University of Oklahoma in the fall of 1940 and graduated in December 1943. He was then commissioned as a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy. In October 1944, he was sent to active duty in the Pacific with the Second Medical Company. Dr. McIntyre's tour of duty took him to New Guinea and the Philippines with the Army Engineers. He was wounded in the Philippines and was reassigned to the U.S. Navy Recruiting Station at Macon, Ga. He as honorably discharged after the war ended, and began a nine-month mixed medical research residency in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in June 1946. In 1947, Dr. McIntyre moved to Enid and opened his office in the Broadway Tower on May 6, 1947. He continued to practice as a physician on staff at St. Mary's and Bass hospitals, where he was chief of medicine and on the executive committee until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1996.

He joined the Kiwanis Club in 1948 and was an active member until 1985. He joined the Presbyterian church in 1949 and served as an elder for many years. Dr. McIntyre was an active member of the Oklahoma State Medical Association, serving on the OSMA House of Delegates for many years. He also served on the board of trustees and was the chairman of the board. He was the president of the OSMA from 1982 to 1983. He also served as a delegate to American Medical Association for many years. Dr. McIntyre served on the board of directors of the Physicians Liability Insurance Co. from 1980 to 1996 and was instrumental in its founding. He was the chairman and president from 1991 to 1996. With his wife, Catherine, Dr. McIntyre traveled throughout the world and to all the 50 states.

Dr. McIntyre was preceded in death by Catherine McIntyre and his parents. Dr. McIntyre is survived by his brother, Ray V. McIntyre, M.D. and wife Kathryn of Kingfisher; son, Dennis Keith McIntyre, M.D. and wife Joan of Enid; daughter, Mary Louise Coley and husband Daryl of Tulsa; four grandchildren, Heather Lutz Henshall and husband Brandon of Oklahoma City, John Bradley McIntyre, M.D. and wife Jessica of Dallas, Texas, Brian Colby Lutz of Jacksonville, Fla., and David Bryant McIntyre and wife Kara of Tulsa; great-granddaughter, Hadley Renae Henshall of Oklahoma City. He also is survived by two close friends, Charlene Grapes of Enid and Patty Oliver of Hennessey.
