June 17, 1935 - July 31, 2018

The funeral for Margaret Douglas Rucks McCune is 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 4, 2018, in the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Andrew Long officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.

Margaret Douglas Rucks McCune of Enid, Oklahoma, was born on June 17, 1935, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She died peacefully on July 31, 2018, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, at Washington Regional Medical Center. She was a resident of Enid, Oklahoma.

Peggy, as she was known, was the beloved wife of Dr. Edward Allison McCune and the beloved mother of four children: Margaret Allison McCune Davis of Enid; Joseph Rucks McCune of Chicago; Evelyn McCune Stival of Fayetteville; and Louisa Douglas McCune, of Oklahoma City.

She was born at Wesley Hospital, which was co-founded by her grandfather, and grew up in Oklahoma City and attended Wilson Elementary School and Harding Junior High School, during which time she was an award-winning junior dog handler. After one year at Classen High School, she attended Gulf Park boarding school in Gulf Port, Mississippi, graduating in 1953. Peggy attended the University of Oklahoma, where she was active in the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

As a young woman, Peggy worked for Stewart Wolf, M.D., at University Hospital in Oklahoma City. During this time, she met Dr. Al McCune, a chief surgical resident at University and Veterans hospitals. Peggy and Al married on January 29, 1960, at her parents' home on Portland Avenue in the Bush Hills neighborhood. They honeymooned in Dallas, Texas and, soon after, moved to Roswell, New Mexico, where Dr. McCune became chief surgeon at the Walker Air Force Base hospital. Following his military service and practice at the Oklahoma City Clinic, the family settled in Enid, Oklahoma.

Peggy ran a warm, welcoming, and busy household for her children, their friends, and many adored pets, among them 11 dogs, 17 cats, 2 birds, 2 rabbits, several gerbils, and dozens of salt-water fish. She was a trusted advisor for people about their pets and was known as an early advocate for animal protection in the community. Peggy was a volunteer, particularly with Meals on Wheels, Hospice, Contact Crisis Center, and the Garfield County Medical Auxiliary. She was a devoted member of PEO Chapter AQ and faithfully attended First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and sang in the choir for many years. In recent years, Peggy traveled with her children and grandchildren, including trips to Ethiopia, England, Paris, the Caribbean, Colorado, Louisiana, Oregon, New York City, and Cooperstown. She shared a lifelong passion for baseball with her father and son; her favorite pitchers were Nolan Ryan and Clayton Kershaw. She also shared a lifelong passion for animals with her mother and her children, believing compassion for animals is an essential component of life. At age 60, Peggy attended aviation ground school, learning to fly and even soloing in a small airplane. She was a sophisticated cinephile, a good knitter, and she enjoyed playing golf with her husband.

Peggy was loving, trustworthy, loyal, open-minded, forgiving, informed, intellectual, elegant, free of judgment, and she had a great sense of humor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. McCune; her father, Dr. William Ward Rucks Jr.; her mother, Louise Douglas Earthman Rucks; her brother, William Ward Rucks III; and her sister, Sallie McFarland Rucks. She is survived by her four children and twelve grandchildren: Margaret Emma Davis, Mary Evelyn Davis, Edward Henry McCune Davis, Ilya Neill Davis, Selamawit Elaine Davis, Gibson Scott Hughes, Amelia Evelyn Hughes, Lucas McCune Hughes, Jackson Starr Hughes, McCune Everett Elmore, William Waits Rucks Elmore, and Edward Earthman Elmore.

At the time of her death, Peggy's pets included seven cats: Blossom, Josephus, Louise, Dark Shadow, Harmony, Tippy, and Tabby. Peggy requested that any donations be made locally to the Enid SPCA and, nationally, to Alley Cat Allies.
