The funeral for Helen Irene Kraus, 98, Enid, will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2010, at Anderson-Burris Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Sheila Combs-Francis officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6-7:30 p.m. today at Anderson-Burris Funeral Home.

She was born to Thomas Dean and Emma (McQuillan) Struthers on Nov. 9, 1911, in Clearwater, Kan., and died Tuesday, March 23, 2010, in Enid.

Helen’s family moved from Clearwater to a farm west of Medford when she was 5 years old. She attended Red Hill School and then graduated from Medford High School in 1928. She continued her education at Phillips University, achieving teacher certification.

Helen taught grades 1-8 at Valley Center School, west of Medford, for four years.

On May 27, 1934, she married George Kraus at her parents’ home west of Medford. For the next 32 years, they lived on a farm west of Jefferson, Okla., in Grant County.

In 1962, Helen began working at Enid State School, where she worked in the supply office for the next 14 years. Helen and George moved to Enid in 1966 and retired in 1976. Following their retirement, they moved to Bentonville, Ark., for 18 months before returning to Enid. They celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1984.

Helen was a member of Jefferson Methodist Church and then New Hope Methodist Church for over 44 years. She also was a member of D.A.R.

She is survived by three daughters, Marjorie Fainter of Wichita, Kan., Marian Pevehouse and husband Robert of San Antonio, Texas, and Nancy Bowling and husband Dan of Blackwell; daughter-in-law, Mary Kraus of St. Cloud, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Scharlotte Kraus, Rob and Verna Kraus, Eddie Kraus, Richard Kraus, Jon Kraus, Kathy and Kris Kraus, Tamara Fainter, Steve and Sharon Powell and Brian Powell; 14 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1986; son, Robert George in 1971; sister, Hazel Vernon in 1966; brother, Maynard Struthers in 2002; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to New Hope Methodist Church.
