John Hess, 83, 1511 W. Elm, died Sunday in a local hospital. His service will be Tuesday at 2 PM in the Ringwood Presbyterian Church with Doctor Charles Lewis Pattison officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Enid under the direction of Fossett Funeral Home.

The body will lie in state in the funeral home chapel until 12:30 PM Tuesday, and then at the church from 1 o'clock until service time. The casket will not be opened after the service.

Hess was born in a sod house on his father's homestead, 7 miles north of Enid, October 1, 1894. He married Frieda Caroline Pummitt January 26, 1921, at Enid. She died September 30, 1973.

The couple had lived on a farm northeast of Kremlin, and in 1923, went to California, moving 1.5 years later back to Enid. In 1941, they moved to a farm near Ringwood, living there until 1964 when he retired and moved back to Enid.

Hess served in the Army during World War I, serving in France with the Army Expeditionary Force. He was a member of the Kremlin Masonic Lodge No. 353, Scottish Right of Guthrie, and a 32nd Degree Mason. He was also a member of the Ringwood Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include one son, John C, Enid; two grandchildren; and two great – grandchildren.
