Funeral services for Raymond F. Hayes, 87 of Enid, will be held at 2 PM Friday, November 5, 1999 at the Ladusau-Evans Chapel. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Ray was born February 5, 1912 in Fayetteville, Tennessee, one of the 12 children of George C. and Florence Young Hayes, and he died Tuesday, November 2, 1999. He moved with his family to Oklahoma at age 7, and attended schools in Mountain View and Sentinel, Oklahoma. He attended college and played football at Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Weatherford, Oklahoma. In 1935, he married Grace Velma West in Oklahoma City.

Ray was self – employed in the trucking business, operating R. F. Hayes Truck Line and Mid-– States Trucking Company from 1950 until he retired in 1972. After five years of retirement, he re-entered the trucking business as a broker of tractor – trailer rigs and oilfield equipment.

After his family, his first passion was golf. He took up the game in 1962 at the age of 50. He shot his age each year from age 67 until he quit playing regularly. He qualified and played in the U. S. Senior Amateur, and was active in the Oklahoma State Senior Golf Association where he was an officer for six years. One of his golfing highlights was playing at St. Andrews golf course in Scotland, and his favorite course was Pebble Beach. He traveled to the U. S. Open in June 1998 and played his last round in July 1999 with his son Jim.

He served on the Enid board of education from 1953 to 1961, and was active in supporting the funding and construction of the D. Bruce Selby Memorial Stadium. He was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his children, Victor Raymond Hayes and wife Jody of Enid, Ann Shaff and husband Ken of Oklahoma City, Judy Lynn Hoisington and husband Tom of Oklahoma City and Jim G. Hayes and wife Debra of Houston, grandchildren Brad Hayes, Vickie Cummings, Bryan Hayes, Rob Shaff, Todd Hoisington, Tyler Hoisington, Monica Hayes, Trese Hayes and James McLaren Hayes. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters, George Hayes of Florida, J. R. Hayes of Houston, Wilma Witt of Tulsa, Ruth Gardner of Louisiana, Mildred Mitchum of Texas, Lydia Young and Edna McGinnis both of California.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Grace Hayes, in April 1987, and a brother Milton Hayes.

Pallbearers included Cleo Fuller, Ray I. Jones, Jack Kalow, Norman Lamb, Sam Lee, Jim Montgomery, D. Tommy Stevens.

Memorials may be made to the Integris Western Village Book Club care of Integris Baptist Medical Foundation with Ladusau-Evans serving as custodians of the fund.
