ENID, Okla. — A celebration service for Dorothy Moore Harbaugh, 102, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at Golden Oaks Chapel. The Rev. Debbie Smith will officiate. A private family graveside will precede the service in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

An only child, Dorothy was born to J. Howard and Clara Belle (Patton) Moore in Arkansas City, Kan., on June 11, 1911, (still the hottest June 11 on record) and passed away peacefully in Enid, Okla., on Saturday, March 1, 2014.

She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1928. She attended predecessor of Cowley County Community College before enrolling at the University of Kansas, from which she graduated with a double degree in piano and public school music in 1932.

Dorothy completed graduate studies at several institutions of higher education before being granted her master’s in education degree from Phillips University, Enid, in 1964.

Dorothy taught school in Mildred and Wichita, Kan., prior to marrying Russell Harbaugh in 1941.

They moved to Enid following Russell’s active military service in the Army Air Corps during WWII. While raising their children, Hank and Ann, she taught at Wilson, Taft and Hayes elementary schools during the 1950s and 1960s, retiring in 1973.

Dorothy was active at First Presbyterian Church, singing in the choir for many years and serving as deacon and elder. She was so pleased to receive the Woman of the Year award from the Presbyterian Women’s organization. She became a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in 2012. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, Mu Phi Epsilon honorary music sorority, AAUW, local, state and national education associations and Chapter Q of PEO.

Dorothy and Russell were thrilled to welcome their grandsons into the world over the years and enjoyed family and friends during fun-filled weekends house-boating, barbecuing and playing bridge at both Keystone and Grand Lakes. They enjoyed traveling to Norman for OU football games and occasional bittersweet moments if KU ever prevailed at the final score.

After Russell passed away in 1979, she volunteered many hours at St. Mary’s Hospital, traveled often, especially to see her children and grandchildren, and continued enjoying her friends at church, PEO and around the bridge table.

In her mid-90s, starting in 2005, Dorothy recorded three CDs of piano classics for the enjoyment of her family and friends. She thoroughly enjoyed entertaining gatherings at church and at Golden Oaks Village with her piano music.

The special honor of being crowned the First Queen Alalah of the annual Arkansas City Fall festival “Arkalalah” in 1928 remained especially significant to Dorothy throughout its 84-year history. She made every effort to attend the festivities to support the tradition and contribute however she could to the college and her hometown. In 2011, she was able to attend the coronation in her 100th year to once again praise the organizers for their hard work in bringing such a positive celebration to the city. Her grandsons and great-grandsons always enjoyed riding with her in the parades through the years.

In 2013, Dorothy established the Dorothy Moore Harbaugh Queen Alalah I Scholarship to be awarded annually to the newly crowned queen.

She is survived by her son, Hank Harbaugh and wife Nancy of Tulsa; daughter, Ann Reding and husband Tom of Enid; three grandsons, Seth Harbaugh of Salt Lake City, Utah, Zachary Harbaugh and wife Angie of Owasso, and A.J. Reding of Norman; four great-grandsons, Adan, Zane and Anson Harbaugh of Owasso and Mark Harbaugh of Salt Lake City.

The family would like to thank the caregivers, staff and all of her “partners” at Golden Oak Village.

Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Enid, or the Dorothy Moore Harbaugh, Queen Alalah I Scholarship at Cowley County Community College with Brown-Cummings serving as custodian of the funds.
