Murray said he would sign his autograph only if Mr. Hall purchased his book.

Ertel enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944, and during World War II served in the Navy Air Corps in Patrol Bombing Squadron 148 in the Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged May 10, 1946.

Ertel asked District Judge Herbert T. Williams for his daughter's hand in marriage, and he and Carolyn Jean Williams were married by his father, Reverend Ertel R. Hall, Sr., in Stilwell on December 21, 1947.
