Merle D. Allen, 73, 2214 Indian Drive, a long – time Enid business man, died early Tuesday after an illness of several weeks.

His funeral service will be at 2 PM Thursday in the Brown Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Leslie G. Everitt officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

The casket will not be opened after the service.

Those who wish may make Memorial contributions to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in Allen's memory, with the funeral home serving as custodian of the fund.

Allen was born in Enid and graduated from high school here. He attended Phillips University and the University of Oklahoma at Norman where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He graduated from Houston University.

After his marriage to Pauline Smith in 1924, Allen operated a service station at Garber during the oil boom and later moved to Perry, operating a gasoline agency there. While living in Perry, Allen served two terms in the Oklahoma State Legislature. He was a member and past President of the Perry Rotary Club and a former member of the Enid Rotary Club. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

In 1942, the Allen's returned to Enid where they operated the Garfield County Tag office under three governors. During the two years he served as director of public relations for the National U. S. Highway 60 Association, 1956 – 58, Alan traveled extensively, promoting the U. S. 60 Highway route across the United States.

Because of ill health, he retired a few years ago.

In addition to his wife Pauline, Alan is survived by a son, Roger D. Allen, Midland, Texas, and two grandchildren.
