The family moved to Fletcher when Ed was 3 months old. At age 13, Ed's father died, so he and his sisters worked picking cotton to support the family. Upon his return from the military, he worked at Liberty Federal Savings and Loan for five years and for 35 years at Kingfisher Federal Savings and Loan before retiring as vice president and Enid branch manager in 1984.

Ed married Madelyn June Matthews in 1940 in Enid. They were introduced by a mutual friend. Ed and his bride enjoyed 54 wonderful years of marriage. Their home was a gathering place for friends and family. They also loved playing golf together. After Ed's retirement, they frequently traveled in their Airstream until Madelyn's death in 1994. Ed and Madelyn were charter members of Emmanuel Baptist Church. He was church treasurer for several years and was instrumental in its development into one of Enid's largest churches. In 1996, Ed married Betty Lee Pollard. Ed and Betty enjoyed playing dominos and cards with friends. They also attended many sporting events, especially baseball games of Ed's grandson Matt Roney. Ed was a longtime member of the Enid Noon Lion's Club and once was named boss of the year by the Red Carpet American Business Women. He also was board chairman of the Baptist Hospital for two years and was a member of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International, and was president of its Oklahoma Unit in 1989.
