Sherman Edward Wilcox, 84, Enid, passed to a heavenly home on Jan. 3, 2015, in Enid, Okla. Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015, at 1 p.m. in the Garber Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Kenneth E. Wade officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow at Garber Cemetery under the kind guidance of the Amy Stittsworth Funeral Service. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps.

Visitation with the family present will be today, Jan. 7, 2015 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Stittsworth’s.

Sherman was born on Aug. 21, 1930, in Springfield, Mo., to William Sherman “Pappy” Wilcox and Gladys Miller Wilcox.

He was raised in Garber, where he attended 12 years of school.

While growing up in Garber, Sherman worked on the family farms and businesses, as well as for Anderson Funeral Home.

In 1948, Sherman joined the United States Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., until his honorable discharge in 1956.

In 1951, Sherman married Norma Jean Meier at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Garber. Sherman served 2 1/2 tours of duty aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge. He also received the Purple Heart Medal from his tour in Korea.

In 1956, Sherman and Norma moved back to Oklahoma with their children, Patricia and William.

He attended OSU and received his accounting degree. Sherman worked for Central National Bank in Enid. Later, Sherman and Norma moved back to Garber to run the family farms.

Sherman also was a heavy equipment operator, salesman for Enid Mack Trucks and worked as a realtor for Willis Babb.

In 2001, Sherman and Norma opened Norma J’s Liquor Store, which they owned for 10 1/2 years.

He was a 3rd Degree Mason.

Sherman said that blood doesn’t make one family, life events do.

Sherman was preceded in passing by his parents, sister, Mary Beth Phillips, half-brothers Frank and Bill Wilcox, son, William Otto Wilcox, and sons-in-law, Captain Glen Scott Porter and Weston Campbell.

Sherman is survived by his wife of 63 years, Norma Wilcox of the residence; daughters, Patricia and husband Bill Berry of Garber, Elizabeth Campbell of Glenpool, and Normlyn Hanes of Colorado; grandchildren, Kristina Gilpin, Angela McCleave, Patrice and Tim Jarrett, William and Justin Wilcox, Weston, Sam and Dustin Campbell, Tiffiny and Brandon McConnell and Macy Hanes; great-grandchildren, Nick Blaser, Cody and William Gilpin, Chelsey, Brandon and Rylee McCleave, Ryan and Justin Jarrett, Anna, Laura and Jacob McConnell and great-great-granddaughter, Julie Blaser; many nieces, nephews, family and beloved friends.

The family has asked for those wishing to leave memorials to the donor’s choice with the Stittsworth’s coordinating.

Norma was born on January 9, 1930 in Garber, Oklahoma, the daughter of Otto and Clara Hauser Meier, and passed away peacefully on April 25, 2017 in Enid. Norma Jean Meier Wilcox went to her heavenly home on April 25, 2017 in Enid. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in Immanuel Lutheran Church of Garber with Pastor Kenneth E. Wade officiating. committal prayers and interment will follow in Garber Cemetery under the kind guidance of the Amy Stittsworth Funeral Service. Visitation with the family present will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Stittsworth’s.

Norma was born at her paternal grandparents home in Garber, Oklahoma. She attended and graduated from the eighth grade at Eureka Neighborhood School in Hunter, Oklahoma. Norma then attended Hunter High School her freshman and sophomore years and Garber High School her junior and senior years where she graduated in 1948. On January 16, 1951, Norma married Sherman Wilcox at Garber Immanuel Lutheran Church. They moved to California where Sherman was stationed in the United States Marine Corps for the next six years. They moved back to the Garber area with their children Patricia and William. Norma and Sherman Wilcox were married 63 years and Norma was a life long member of Garber Immanuel Lutheran Church. Norma loved being outside, mowing, farming, raising huge gardens, fishing and camping.

Norma is survived by her sister, Vera Cramer of Mound Valley, Kansas; Daughters, Patricia and Bill Berry, Elizabeth Campbell, all of Garber and Normlyn Hanes of Colorado Springs, Colorado; grandchildren, Kristina Gilpin, Angela McCleave, Patrice Jarrett, William and Justin Wilcox, Tiffiny and Brandon McConnell, Sam and Madison Campbell, Dustin Campbell, Wes Campbell, Macy Hanes; Thirteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Norma was preceded in this life by her parents, husband Sherman Wilcox, son William Wilcox, sisters, Golda Cramer and Delories Kitterman, brothers, Donald Meier and Ray Dean Meier, son-in-laws, Captain Glen Scott Porter and Weston Campbell.

Norma loved cooking big meals and having family and friends gathered together.

Donations can be made to Hospice, Circle of Love or to the donor’s choosing with Amy Stittsworth Funeral Service serving as custodian of the fund.
