Dr. Vernie Lee Vinyard, 84, of Bartlesville, died at 1:51 PM Friday at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa.

Funeral services for Dr. Vinyard will be 10 AM Wednesday at Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel in Bartlesville with Rev. Kathy Morris of First United Methodist Church of Bartlesville officiating. Graveside services and interment will be 3 PM Wednesday in Garber Cemetery, Garber, Oklahoma where military honors will be accorded by the Covington American Legion Post 190. Funeral services and interment are under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home and Crematory, Bartlesville.

Dr. Vinyard was born April 27, 1923, near Covington Oklahoma to Alan Robert and Carrie Mabel (Devore) Vinyard. He grew up in the Garber area and graduated from Garber High School in 1942. Following graduation he continued to work on the family farm until entering the U.S. Army during World War I I on June 20, 1944. He served in France and Germany receiving the Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars, Overseas Service Bars, Army of Occupation Medal – Germany, and the Good Conduct Medal. Following his honorable discharge as a corporal on July 17, 1946, he returned to Oklahoma and was active as a wheat farmer for a period of time. He then attended and graduated from Phillips University and then the University of Oklahoma school of Medicine. He received additional training at Wesleyan and Mercy Hospitals in Oklahoma City and also served as a doctor with the Veterans Administration in California.

He was married to Norma Jean Cummings on June 4, 1949, and in the summer of 1956 they moved to Bartlesville when Dr. Vinyard established his family practice in which he remained active until his retirement in April 1994. They continue their home in Bartlesville and Mrs. Vinyard preceded him in death.

Survivors include: one daughter, Jennifer Carol Vinyard – Houx of Frisco, Colorado; one son, Daniel E Vinyard of Bartlesville; one sister, Blanche Vinyard Hackler of Ponca City; and two grandchildren, Jeremiah Ross Vinyard - Houx and Natalie Jean Vinyard – Houx; his sister-in-law, Barbara Ann Fischer of Enid; and his favorite niece, Janet Fischer Kiss of Ada.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Vinyard was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Alan Vinyard Jr., and three sisters Beulah Vinyard Lafon, Myrtle Vinyard McInturff, and Mildred Vinyard Clevenger.
