Garrison Everett Munger, Jr.

A memorial celebration of the life of Garry Munger will be at 2:00pm, Thursday, January 18, 2007, at the First Presbyterian Church of Enid, following a private family interment in Enid Cemetery with Pastor Roy Schneider officiating under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. The casket will be open until 10:30 A.M. Thursday at the funeral home.

Munger was born May 14, 1921 in Enid, Oklahoma to parents, Garrison E. Munger and Ruth Gannon Munger.

Garry was proud to be a descendent of pioneer Oklahomans. His grandfather, C.E. Gannon of Enid, made three of the Oklahoma Land Runs and William Munger established the first general store in Watonga. Graduating from Enid High School in 1939, he continued his education at the University of Oklahoma, earning a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. While at OU, he served as president of his fraternity, Phi Delta Theta and joined the newly formed OU Naval ROTC unit. As a graduate of the first ROTC class, he was one of three men to be commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy upon his graduation in 1943. One day after being commissioned, August 27, 1943, he married his high school sweetheart, Jane Suggett, of Enid.

At the height of World War II, Munger served 18 months in the Pacific Theater of War as a gunnery officer on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hancock CV-19. He received a commendation for his actions after the carrier sustained a direct hit from a Japanese Kamikaze bomber. In 1946, Munger returned to Enid to enter the real estate and insurance business. Involved in land development, he is credited with opening several residential sub-divisions and was also involved with residential and commercial construction. He served as owner and manager of the Broadway Tower and was involved in other real estate interests. After serving as a member and president of the Enid Realtors, Munger was honored by Life Membership of the Oklahoma Association of Realtors and was designated Realtor Emeritus by the National Association of Realtors for 50 year membership. A committed civic and business leader, Munger was a member and president of the Enid Chamber of Commerce, chosen Citizen of the Year in 1993, and served on the board of the State Chamber of Commerce. The Salvation Army recognized his dedicated service to their board by naming him Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1988 and he was accorded the honor of a life Board membership. Additional community service includes his active 50-year membership in Rotary, which included serving as president. He also served as chairman of the Enid United Way, president of the Enid Campfire Girls, and board member of Integris Bass Baptist Hospital.

A dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church since 1946, Garry was active in all phases of church leadership. He served as Elder, Deacon, and Trustee and was the local church delegate to Presbytery. He was then chosen by the Presbytery to be delegate to the National Assembly.

A devoted husband of 63 years, he is survived by his wife, Jane. He will be loved and missed by his four children, daughter Marilyn Keller with husband Ed, daughter Margaret Wright, daughter Ann Fleming and husband Zane, and son John Munger. Garry was adored by his nine dear grandchildren, Griff Jones and wife Mindi, Meredith Wright, Elizabeth Paul and husband Chris, Sarah Weisgarber and husband Eric, Drue Diesselhorst and husband Matt, Alexandra Munger, Kyle Keller and wife Chaunsea, Courtney Davis and husband Jeremy. Four great-grandchildren are Kennedy and Kale Jones, Kassidy Paul, and Keller Davis.

Garry is preceded in death by grandson Nate Fleming, parents Garrison and Ruth Munger, and sisters, Doris Conrad and Virginia Munger. His incredible courage and perseverance after contracting polio in 1949 led to a full life that was an inspiration and example to his family and friends. It was his unfailing faith, positive attitude, and a helping hand to others which will always define his life.

The family thanks Dr. Brian Whitson, Jo George, and Sandy Myers for their help and sweet concern in the care of Garry. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made in his honor to the Salvation Army of Enid or the First Presbyterian Church of Enid.

Custodian of the funds is Brown-Cummings Funeral Home, 400 W. Maple, Enid, Oklahoma 73701. Condolences may be made to the family online @ Brown-Cummings.com .
