The home-going for Mrs. Shirley Mitchell, 71, of Enid, will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at First Missionary Baptist Church, Enid, with the Rev. Wilbur Flynn officiating and Pastor Coefficient Carle King of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.

Burial will follow in Enid Cemetery under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

She was born Jan. 24, 1942, in Kingfisher, Okla., to Alva and Edith Johnston Norwood and passed away Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, in Enid.

She grew up and was educated in Kingfisher and Dover, graduating from Kingfisher High School in 1959.

She moved to Enid in 1972 with her family.

She worked in retail sales until 1974, when she became a para-professional, working with and advocating for special needs students in the Enid Public Schools system.

She retired after more than 22 years.

After retirement, she became a full-time grandmother.

She spent the last years of her life living with her daughter, receiving some of the special care that she always gave.

She is survived by three sons, Wilbur Flynn and wife Penny of Enid, Kenny Flynn and wife Sherri of Enid, and James Graham and wife Rosa of Enid; two daughters, Alecia and husband Anthony Clardy of Enid and Leona Smith of Oklahoma City; brothers, Alva Norwood Jr. of Italy, Larry Norwood and wife Rosetta of Douglas, Ga., Greg Norwood and wife Bennetta of Broken Arrow, Frank Norwood and wife Roshel of Denton, Texas, and Darnell Norwood of Enid; sisters, Gladys Lawrence and husband Andrew of Enid, Terry Andrews and husband Harold of Enid, and Emma Alexander of Tulsa; 13 grandchildren; and 12 greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded by her son, Charles Flynn; parents; five brothers; and two sisters.

Memorials may be given to Deliverance House Women’s Shelter with Brown-Cummings serving as custodian of the funds.
