The Burial of the Dead with Holy Eucharist will be celebrated for David Ellsworth Hume, age 90, La Habra, California, on Monday, March 19, 2:00 p.m., at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Enid, Oklahoma; with The Rev. Dr. John Forest Toles, officiating. Hume, formerly of Enid, died Sunday, March 11, 2018, at St. Margarets Home, La Habra, California.

Dave was born Tuesday, May 24, 1927, in the Orchard Apartments, in downtown Enid, to Fletta Irene (Colson) and David Shelton Hume. His fathers automobile garage was on the ground floor of their apartment building.

Humes grandparents, Alice (Jeffrey) and Ellsworth Hume, made the Cherokee Strip Land Run on Saturday, September 16, 1893. Ellsworth was later a Garfield County Sheriff and Garfield County Commissioner. Dave was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, where he was an acolyte and member of the Order of St. Vincent. As an adult, he was a parish pledge clerk and diocesan convention delegate.

Hume attended Adams Elementary, Longfellow Junior High and Enid High Schools, graduating with the Class of 1945. At Enid High, he was Student Body Treasurer, May Fete Attendant, and Quill Magazine staffer.

Upon graduation, Dave enlisted with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He attended boot camp at Naval Station Great Lakes near North Chicago. He completed boot camp and came home on leave. He returned to Chicago following that leave just in time to celebrate VJ Day. From Chicago, he was stationed at Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida, where he completed his military service.

Upon his return from the Navy, Hume followed in his fathers footsteps and graduated from Enid Business College; he also attended Phillips University. He worked at Vance Air Force Base prior to joining the family automobile business, Hume Motor Company, which was founded by his father, uncle, and grandfather. He also farmed with his father and brother, Bob.

On Halloween, Friday, October 31, 1947, Dave married his longtime Sunday school classmate and high school sweetheart, Betty Vance Smith, at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, where they had first met. They portrayed Mary and Joseph in the parish nativity pageant when they were in the sixth grade.

Upon the deaths of their father and uncle in 1958, Dave and his brother, Bob, owned and operated Hume Motor Company, later Hume Dodge, until its sale in 1967. Dave moved to Southern California in 1968, where he continued a career in the automobile industry and later in industrial sales as a manufacturers representative, retiring in 1992.

Dave was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, brothers Robert and John, and several aunts and uncles.

Hume is survived by his wife, Betty, of the home, La Habra, California; children David (Sharon) Hume, and Sally Hume (David) Cook, Enid; Jeff (Francee) Hume, Oklahoma City; and John (Jacqueline) Hume, Mission Viejo, California; and grandchildren Claire (Stan Miller) Hume, Stillwater; Libby Hume (D.F.) Gaspar, Edgewood, Washington; Courtney Hume (Daniel) Filer, and Lesley Hume (Thomas) Keele, Austin, Texas; Andrew Hume, Edmond; John David (Francis) Blancuzzi, Ponca City; Betsy Cook (Stacie Smith) Bell, Pilot Grove, Missouri; Jessica Cook (Lonnie) Morton, Enid; Justin Hume (Jessica) Cook, Mount Airy, MD; Hunter Hume, Landon Hume, Summer Hume and Brock Hume, Mission Viejo, California; and 17 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Marlene Hume (Harland, deceased) Stewart, Ponca City; sister-in- law, Lou Hume, Aurora, Colorado; five nephews, two nieces and numerous cousins.

Following the burial office, interment will be in the Hume family plot at Enid Cemetery, with Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. The family requests no flowers. Gifts may be made to the Memorial Fund at St. Matthews Episcopal Church.
