Margaret Parker Cowan, age 94 years, died April 8, 2016 at her residence at Golden Oaks in Enid.

Margaret was born April 6, 1922 in Douglas, Oklahoma, to Dr. H.G. and Olive Parker. Her grandparents Parker were some of the first settlers in Garfield County. Her father, Homer Parker, opened his medical practice in what was then Onyx in 1904. Margaret had three sisters: her twin Martha Lee, Ruth Parker Moseley, and Marion Parker Dunn. She graduated from Douglas High School in 1939. In her senior year she was Vice-President of her class and throughout high school she was active in 4-H and basketball. Her college degree was in early childhood education/ home economics from then Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater. As a college freshman, she met the love of her life, Ansel Cowan. They married in January 1942 before Ansel enlisted in the Army Air Corp. They were married 71 years when he died in November 2013.

After the war, Ansel was employed by Haliburton Company as a diesel mechanic and shop foreman and was assigned to various areas in the South including Haynesville and Vidalia, Louisiana; Laurel, Mississippi and Flomaton, Alabama. The couple lived in Atmore, Alabama, for thirty years before deciding to retire in their native Oklahoma. They moved to Golden Oaks Village in 2002.

Margaret had several passions in life: her family, her church community, and college basketball. One of her treasured possessions in her last years was her OSU blanket. She and Ansel, in their early retirement, enjoyed traveling and doing mission work through their Baptist Church. Margaret was dearly loved as a kind, gentle person who always was thinking of others. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, sisters and husband. She was the last of her generation in both her family of origin and her Cowan family by marriage.

Surviving Margaret are her three children: Howard [Sue] Cowan, Sr. Macrina Cowan, Geoffrey [Steffi] Cowan; her five grandchildren; Eric Cowan, Greg Cowan, Sarah Hraban, Jennifer Cowan Daniel and Christy Cowan Yousefi; and twelve great grandchildren; Aubrey Cate, Colette Parker and Laurel Cowan; Garrison, Annaliese Qiao Jie and Genevieve Cai Die Cowan; Amelia Morrow, Asher Daniel; Aedan, Elijah, Noah and Isacc Hraban. Margaret had three surviving nephews and one niece.

The funeral service for Margaret will be 10:00am Thursday, April 14, 2016 in the Chapel of Golden Oaks. She will be privately buried in the Douglas Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.
