Douglas Union Cemetery


John Michael "Mike" Allen, age 47, of Oklahoma City, died Sunday in the Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was born August 6, 1948 at McPherson, Kansas to Ted and Pat Gilbert Allen. He was raised in Junction City, Kansas and later moved with his parents to Douglas. He graduated from Covington – Douglas high school in 1966. He graduated from Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa with an Associate's Degree in history. He also earned a BS Degree in history from OSU, and an MS Degree in history from SWOSU at Weatherford.

He taught history and coached girls basketball at Taft junior high in Oklahoma City and later taught history and coached boys and girls basketball at Northwest Classen high school in Oklahoma City. In 1991 he was elected President of the Oklahoma City Federation of Teachers and had held that position at the time of his death. He was a member of the Oklahoma and National Polled Hereford Associations. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Covington. Mike was a devoted advocate for teacher's rights and the Oklahoma public school system. Mike's love was working with his polled hereford cattle and farming on his farm in Douglas.

He is survived by: his mother, Pat Allen of Douglas; one brother, Doug and his wife, Kathy of Edmond; two nieces: Lindsey and Emily; one grandmother, Gertrude Gilbert of Douglas; one uncle, Don Allen of Ohio; and his special friend, Rikki Abrams of Oklahoma City.

He was preceded in death by his father on July 3, 1988, his maternal grandfather and paternal grandparents.

Funeral services for Mike will be at 2 PM Wednesday in the old Covington school gymnasium with the Rev. Tommy Donaldson officiating. Burial will follow in the Douglas Cemetery under the direction of Henninger – Allen Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Cancer Division with Henninger – Allen Funeral Home serving as custodian of the fund. The casket will remain open at the funeral home until 11 AM Wednesday.
