Del Norte Cemetery

ENID — Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2011, at Puritan Congregational Church, Drummond, with burial to follow in Del Norte Cemetery. Service is under the direction of Anderson - Burris Funeral Home & Crematory.

William J. "Bill" Allen, 99-year-old Drummond resident, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2011, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center, Enid, following a stroke he suffered at his home on May 3, while working in his garden.

He was born Dec. 23, 1911, in Fountain Grove, Mo. As an infant, he moved with his parents to Hodgenville, Ky. He attended Crossroads Country School at rural Hodgenville, where he loved to read and memorize various selections. In spite of the many hardships he suffered while growing up, he remained a true Kentuckian at heart throughout his lifetime and was proud to have been raised close to Abraham Lincoln's birthplace. His mother died when he was eight years old and his father died when he was 17. He worked at odd jobs for room and board, and earned 75 cents to a dollar a day, unless it was blackberry season, when he could pick four gallons each morning, earning 15 cents a gallon, then plowed fields in the afternoon for 50 cents.

In December 1937 at the age of 26, Bill came to Oklahoma with his younger brother. He stayed with his uncle Sam Allen and met Anna Belle Austin in Sam's grocery store. They were married Oct. 22, 1938, in Enid and celebrated 72 years of marriage before her death in November 2010. They lived in the Drummond community most of their married life.

In earlier years, he farmed and owned Allen Oil Co. He was an active member of Puritan Congregational Church, Drummond, where he served in various positions over the years. He was an active member of Waukomis Masonic Lodge 161 and served as Honorary Sword Bearer at Grand Master Chuck Belnap's installation. He also was honored as Mason of the Year by Waukomis Lodge. He was a former Drummond volunteer fireman, served on the Drummond Town Board, attended the Enid Senior Center twice each week and was a charter member of Drummond Lions Club. After he retired, he and Anna Belle traveled extensively, owned a winter home in South Texas and never tired of returning to his beloved Kentucky. His last trip to Hodgenville was in May of last year. He visited his mother's grave at his boyhood church, Nolynn Baptist of rural Hodgenville, Ky., on May 23, 2010, which was exactly 90 years after her death in 1920.

He is survived by his children, Joe and Connie Allen, Judy and Roger Prewett and Kay Allen; son-in-law, Randy McWilliams; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several loving nieces and nephews and many supportive friends.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a beloved daughter, Gayla McWilliams, his parents and his brother Albert.

Bill remained extremely active throughout his life, enjoyed gardening, attending church services, lodge meetings, playing cards at the Enid Senior Center and amazed people by reciting passages from the Bible and selections that he learned in his childhood.

Memorial contributions may be made to Enid Senior Center or Waukomis Masonic Lodge 161 with the funeral home acting as custodians of the fund.

Condolences may be made to the family at www.anders onburris.com.
