Covington Cemetery


Staff Sgt. Carl J. Reid, 27, died in Vietnam from wounds received February 24 from hostile fire. He had been in Vietnam since October 4, 1967 and had just received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered October 27, 1967. He had just returned to action last December.

Born in Sweetwater, Texas, February 28, 1941, he spent his childhood in San Angelo, Texas and moved to Enid in 1955. He attended Enid high school and joined the Army in 1958.

He married the former Mary Kathryn Reim, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver J. Reim of Covington, December 20, 1959.

Serving with the infantry for the past 10 years, he had been stationed for three years in Berlin, Germany, and in Korea in 1964 and 1965. In 1965 he returned to Kirch Goens, Germany for 18 months.

He has served with the Military Police at Ft. Gordon, Georgia, and was serving with the first Air Cavalry in Vietnam at the time of his death. He was a member of Central Christian Church of Enid.

A memorial fund has been established in his name at the Covington Christian Church. The church and Henninger – Allen Funeral Home will act as custodians of the fund.

Sgt. Reid is survived by his wife of the home in Covington; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Reid, Crane, Texas; three brothers, Thornton, Ft. Stockton, Texas, Charles W., Houston, Texas, John A., San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Berta Pruitt, San Angelo, Texas, and Mrs. Becky Kriethe, Ft. Stockton, Texas.

Funeral services with full military honors will be at 2 PM Tuesday in the Hewnninger- Allen Funeral Home Chapel with a Ft. Sill Army chaplain officiating. Military burial will be in the Covington Cemetery.
