Funeral services for Arthur Carl Helling, age 97, of Covington, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at St. John's Lutheran Church of Covington. Rev. Jerry Brown will officiate. Burial will follow in the Covington Cemetery . There will be a visitation from 5:30-7:30 p.m. today, Dec. 22, 2008, in the Chapel of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home .

He was born Sept. 15, 1911, on the family farm west of Covington to Carl and Rebecca Lhurs Helling and died early Saturday morning, Dec. 20, 2008, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center.

Arthur was raised and attended school in Covington. After leaving school to farm, he also became a fine pitcher for the local baseball teams. These included Perry, Covington and Enid.

While he was playing ball and farming, he worked in the oil fields. He was being recruited to play baseball in New York until he had an accident in the oil field and that ended his chances to play in the major leagues.

On Nov. 16, 1942, Arthur was drafted into the United States Army. He was transferred over to the United States Army Air Corps, where he served in the European Theater with the 487th Fighter Squadron. This took him to Germany, France, England, Belgium, Normandy and Central Europe. He finished his tour of duty as a sergeant and was discharged Nov. 18, 1945. Arthur came back to Covington and went back to his beloved wheat farming and cattle ranching

On March 7, 1951, he married Doris Decker in Marshall, OK. They stayed in the Covington area, where besides farming, he was an excellent hunter and trapper. He also worked with Farm Home Administration Advisory Board for six years. Arthur was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Helling; three daughters, Judy Vrska and her husband, Charles of Enid, Carol Layman of Breckinridge and Connie Oxford and her husband, Ricky of Covington; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Arthur was preceded in death by a grandson, Carl Vrska, three brothers and a sister.

Memorials can be made through the funeral home to St. John's Lutheran Church.

A Celebration of Life for Doris Louise Helling, 85, of Covington, will Monday, July 11. 2016, 2:00 PM, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Covington with Pastor Christopher Griffith officiating. Interment will follow in the Covington Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home from 3 to 4PM on Sunday. Doris was born March 7, 1931 in Faye, OK and passed away July 6, 2016.

The former Doris Decker was united in marriage to Arthur C. Helling March 7, 1951 in Marshall, OK and he preceded her in death Dec. 20, 2008. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Covington. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Vrska and her husband Charles of Enid and Connie Oxford and her husband Rick of Covington, OK, 6 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 10 great great-grandchildren and one sister, Rita Bowling of Perkins, OK. She was also preceded in death by her parents, George and Gladys Haken, a daughter, Carol Layman, a grandson, Carl Vrska and one sister Ruth.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church Bible Rascals with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds. The service may be viewed and condolences left at www.ladusauevans.com.
