The community was again saddened by the death of Mr. Allen Downing at the General Hospital at Enid, November 12. Mr. Downing was born in Davis Co., Ia., March 10, 1855, being at the time of his demise 75 years, 8 months and 2 days of age. He was married December 29, 1881, to Malissa J. Miller. To this union four children were born, one son and three daughters. The youngest daughter died in early life. Mr. and Mrs. Downing with their family came to Oklahoma in 1893, securing a farm in the opening of the Cherokee Strip, east of Douglas, on which they lived until 1911, moving to Stillwater, where they lived until two years ago when they moved here in town where they since have resided. In the decline of life, Mr. Downing was a cheerful, kind and considerate neighbor and friend. He was never too weary to converse with the younger people, always taking an interest in their activities. He was one of the sturdy pioneers whose honesty and integrity was never questioned.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his devoted wife, Mrs. Malissa Downing, daughters, Mrs. Bertha Spencer of Oklahoma City; Mrs. Amy Milar, son Roy Downing, two grandsons, Ivan and Verl Milar, three brothers, A.A. Downing, E.E. Downing of Arkansas City and C.M. Downing of Cotta, N.M.; and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at the Christian Union church in Douglas by the Rev. Stewart of Oklahoma City and interment was made in the Covington Cemetery.
