Bison Cemetery


KEARNEY, NEB. — Mark E. Markes, 65, died Sunday, May 25, 2014, at Good Samaritan Hospital. A memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2014, at St. James Catholic Church. Father Joe Hannappel will officiate. Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 1, 2014, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Bison. Father Edward Menasco will officiate. Burial will follow in Bison Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the churches in Kearney and Bison.

Memorials are suggested to Kearney area animal shelter, in care of the Markes family. A message of condolence, tribute or memory can be left at www.hlmkfuneral.com. Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral Services, Kearney, and Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home, Enid, are in charge of arrangements.

Mark was born November 8, 1948, in Enid, Oklahoma, to Vincent E. and Marcella M. (Krejci) Markes.

He attended Pioneer High School in Waukomis and graduated with the class of 1967. Mark then attended Oklahoma State University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in 1971 and a Ph.D. in 1978 in physics.

He married Cecelia Trecia Hill May 10, 1974, in Stillwater.

Mark and Trecia settled in Colorado Springs, where Mark worked for Kaman Sciences from 1980-1992. Later they moved to Kearney, where Mark was an associate professor in the physics department at UNK. Mark retired from teaching at UNK in 2011. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Trecia of Kearney; son, David E. Markes of Omaha, NE; daughter, Maryann C. Markes and her husband Christopher Moore of Medford, OR; parents, Vincent and Marcella Markes of Bison, OK; brothers, Tim and Gale Markes of Douglas, OK, Alan and Karyn Markes of Drummond, OK, Mike Markes of Bison, OK; sisters, Francine and Steve Longmire of Lone Wolf, OK, Carol and Ron Boyer of Fredonia, KS, Karen Ray of Chandler, OK; and numerous nieces and nephews.
