Bison Cemetery


Mass of Christian burial for Esther B. Irey, 100, of Waukomis, will be 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bison, Okla., with Father Roberto Quant, celebrant. Burial will follow in Bison Cemetery. Recitation of the Rosary will be 7 p.m. today, Sept. 10, 2009, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Services are under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home. Esther peacefully departed this life to be with her heavenly Creator Monday, Sept. 7, 2009.
She is survived by son, Thomas R. Irey and wife Karen of Norman, Okla.; daughters, Judy Winchester of Enid and Jane Roberts and husband Robert of Winston-Salem, N.C. She also is survived by three grandchildren, Kathy Stevens and husband Scott of Sammamish, Wash., Ryan Roberts and wife Kathy of Raleigh, N.C., and Gregg Winchester and wife Nancy of Lawrence, Kan.; as well as five great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Lynn Felber of Bison.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, her parents, four brothers and four sisters.

Esther was born Dec. 8, 1908, to Mike and Christina (Rudd) Felber. She grew up on a farm northeast of Bison, Okla. As a young girl, who had four brothers and four sisters, she attended White School and St. Joseph's Academy High School in Bison, graduating in 1927. She entered nursing school at Phillips University, graduating in 1930 and subsequently being employed as a registered nurse at St. Mary's Hospital.

Esther married Raymond A. Irey Oct. 4, 1936. She has been a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church for 60 years, where she was communion minister and for many years assembled rosaries for the Lady of Fatima state shrine at Bison, Okla. She was, for years, a member of St. Joseph's Altar Society and served as one of its presidents. She belonged to civic clubs such as Daughters of the Cherokee Strip, Oklahoma Historical Society and Fourth District of Nurses Association.
