Carl Hurley Sheppard
1944 - 2005
Carl Hurley Sheppard May 4, 1944 Sept. 30, 2005 Wake Services will be held on Friday, October 7,
2005 for Carl H. Sheppard at Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Chapel 2739 Panama, at 6:00 p.m. and
church services on Saturday, October 8, 2005 at St. Johns Missionary Baptist Church 1300 Brundage
Ln. at 10:00 a.m. Services will be conducted by Pastor Howard Cox and the Kern County Veterans
Association.
Carl Hurley Sheppard departed this life on September 30, 2005. He was born May 4, 1944 in Bristow,
Oklahoma to the late Sherry and Juanita Sheppard. He was the eldest of twelve children.
Carl accepted Christ as an early age, baptized by Pastor Isaac Chandler at the Church of God. He
rededicated his life to God, prior to his home going.
We loved him but God loved him more.
He was employed in the construction industry from 1965-1971. In 1971, Carl became a Correctional
Officer and was employed by the following prisons, Tehachapi, Soledad, Susanville. He was promoted
to Correctional Lieutenant and took a position at CRC in Corona; he became Camp Commander at
Francisquito in Valencia, CA. He retired from the Department of Corrections at North Kern State
Prison in Delano.
Carl loved his job and enjoyed sharing his experiences with anyone who gave him a listening ear,
young or old.
Carl was preceded in death by his mother, Juanita and father, Sherry; two brothers Alfred and
Sherry; two nephews, Jacob and Isaac. He will be missed dearly by his loving wife, Gloria; two
sons, Steven and Carl Jr.; three brothers, Larry, Calvin and Rebecca, Ivery and Nia, all of
Bakersfield, CA; six sisters, Marie and Don Cole of Sacramento, CA; Geraldine and Edward Hughey of
Bakersfield, CA; Karen Sheppard-Williams and Carl of Las Vegas, NV; Cheryl Sheppard of Suisun, CA;
Ruthie and Daryl Jones and Myra and Gregory Jackson, and sister-in-law, Schevon Sheppard all of
Bakersfield, CA; Aunt Ruthie Jackson of Los Angeles, CA; and a host of nieces, nephews and
cousins.
Visitation will be held Friday, October 7, 2005 from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
