Alma Dilks

December 29, 1925 ~ December 23, 2010

Funeral services for Mrs. Alma V. Dilks, age 84, of Norman, will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 South University Blvd in Norman with Dr. Dick House officiating.
Alma was born December 29, 1925 in Temple, Oklahoma the daughter of P. Harrison and Mary Ellen (Kendrick) Tipton. She passed away Thursday, December 23, 2010 at her home in Norman. She attended schools in Temple, graduating from Temple High School in 1943. Alma was united in marriage to Mr. Russell Dilks on December 11, 1942 in Comanche, Oklahoma.
Alma and Russell moved to Norman in 1948, where Alma began began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone in the late 1940's. She remained with Southwestern Bell before joining the Federal Aviation Administration, working there until the early 1960's. She later joined the United States Postal Training Center, working as an executive secretary, retiring in 1979.
During her retirement, Alma enjoyed cooking large meals for her family, hosting numerous holidays. She enjoyed beautiful fresh flowers, gardening, and painting. Alma was also an avid OU football fan, and enjoyed traveling to support her Sooners on the road. Alma loved music and enjoyed collecting antiques. No other past time warmed her heart more than spending time with her family. She adored her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and they will miss her greatly.
Alma spent numerous hours volunteering for the Salvation Army, supporting them in numerous roles, including ringing the bell and offering her secretarial skills. She also volunteered in the church library at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church for many years before her health forced her to stop.
Alma and Russell have been members of McFarlin for more than 60 years, where they were very active in the Fellowship Sunday School class.
Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Russell of the home; two sons; Larry Dilks and his wife, Janie of Norman; Richard Dilks of Norman; one daughter; Denise Zachary of Norman; 10 grandchildren; Rick Dilks and his wife, Susan of Owasso, OK; Jennifer Allen and her husband, Shane of Lee Summit, MO; Kerri Tiedeman and her husband, Alan of Norman; Tracee Dickie and her husband, Joe of Las Vegas, NV; Aaron Dilks of Norman; Kaylee Dilks of Norman; Ryan Sandefer and his wife, Amanda, of Oklahoma City; Drew Sandefer and his wife, Leah of Norman; Marshall Zachary of Norman; and Bryce Zachary of Norman; and 15 great grandchildren; one special cousin, who shared their home with them more than 30 years, Vaudia Kendrick; and numerous nieces, nephews and additional family and friends.
Alma was preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter, Sherri Little on February 16, 2009; four brothers; Chester Tipton, Archie Tipton, Hershel Tipton, and Doyle Tipton; and four sisters; Artie Crow; Lema Chambers; Clara Chambers; and Audrey Bean.
The family would like to offer a special Thank You to Pam McCutchen, Kathy Thompson and Carter Hospice.
The Dilks family will greet friends from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm Monday, December 27, 2010 at the Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook Street in Norman.
Burial will conclude at 3:00 pm Tuesday, December 28, 2010 in the Temple Cemetery in Temple, Oklahoma.
