Maurice Mayfield

Birth date: August 3, 1955
Death date: May 18, 2014

Maurice was born on August 3, 1955 in Lawton, Oklahoma to proud parents Andrea Lee and L.J. Mayfield. He was described as a 'good baby' and 'curious from the beginning. His parents taught he and his brother, Eugene, to value and appreciate their blessings; treat others as they would like to be treated; to always help those in need, and to love and believe in God.

Maurice was educated at Dunbar Elementary School, Central Junior High and Lawton High School

Maurice loved all sports, but baseball was his favorite. Maurice was an integral part of Lawton High's powerful teams in the early 1970's. Prior to his graduation in 1973, Maurice received his letter for outstanding achievements on the diamond. After a brief time at Central State University, Maurice was employed at Chapman Construction, Underwood's Restaurant and Gibsons Discount Center before beginning a 30 plus year career at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.

During that period of time, Maurice organized and managed Lawton's first and only black softball team - The Hollywood Players. The Hollywood Players - comprised of family and childhood friends - won league play and tournaments at the local and state level.

It was also during this time that Maurice met and married the love of his life - the former Ora Williamson. They enjoyed years of love and happiness. Maurice was a man with a big heart.

He loved people and formed many long and meaningful friendships during his lifetime.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Andrea and L J Mayfield, and a sister, Sydney McHenry.

Cherishing his memory are his wife, Ora of the home; two sons, Maurice Mayfield Jr. and Roddrick Mayfield both of Lawton; one brother, Eugene Mayfield of Lawton; two grandsons; Anthony Riss and Jonathan Thompkins, both of Lawton; two special sisters, Natalie Diggs of Killeen, TX and Rose Duckett of Lawton; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
