© Whinery~Huddleston Funeral Service Lawton, Oklahoma October 01, 2016 Hugh Dorris Martin Jr Hugh Dorris Martin, Jr. passed away in Lawton, Oklahoma on October 1, 2016. He was born in Reform, Mississippi on March 21, 1924. A visitation will be held Tuesday, October 4, 2016 from 6pm-8pm at Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 2:00pm at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Lawton. Burial with full military honors will be held following the service. Arrangements are under direction of Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Service. Hugh's first job was working in the saw mill, while still a teenager. He quickly learned how to drive a truck and delivered lumber from central Mississippi to Memphis, Tennessee. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1943 and completed basic training at Ft. Shelby, Mississippi before posting to Europe in the autumn of 1944. In World War II, Hugh served in the 273rd Infantry Regiment, 69th Division and earned three battle stars for the Battle of the Bulge, the Battle of the Rhine and the Battle for Central Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star for actions during the Battle of the Bulge. Following the war, he was a member of the Occupation Force and was then posted to the 45th Brigade at Ft. Bliss, Texas in 1949. He married the love of his life, Jo Nell Brooks, in November 1951 and the couple was stationed at RAF Greenham Common in England. Their first child, Richard Hugh Martin, was born in England in 1953 and died at the age of six months. Hugh was posted to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma as a Field Artillery Instructor from 1954 until 1963, when he was posted to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri with the 62nd Engineering Battalion. In 1964, he was posted to the Hylei Compound in South Korea as a member of the Korean Military Advisory Group (KMAG) and in 1965, his battalion shipped-off to Phan Rang, South Vietnam. He completed his military service with the 84th Field Artillery Regiment, Pershing Missile Battalion, in Neckersulm, West Germany and retired to Ft. Sill in 1969. Hugh is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years and four children and their spouses: Vicki Martin and Lou Martin of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; Jeffery Martin of Lawton, Oklahoma; Debra Martin and Janette Thornbrue of Edmond, Oklahoma; and David and Cynthia Salazar Martin of Lawton. He has five grandchildren: Carri Martin Kifer of Stillwater, Valeri Martin of Tulsa, and Austin, Taylor and Jacob Martin of Lawton. He has one great-grandchild, Nicholas Kifer of Stillwater, Oklahoma and one step-grandchild, MacKenzie Kifer, also of Stillwater. Following his 26-year Army career, Hugh was employed as a truck driver for Grayson Sand and Gravel and A.J. Little Trucking companies in Lawton, retiring fulltime in 1991. He was an active volunteer with Reynolds Army Hospital at Ft. Sill and was named the 2001 Outstanding Older Oklahoma Man by the Association of South Central Oklahoma Governments (ASCOG). He was also recognized for transporting more than 30,000 fellow veterans to the Veterans Medical Centers in Oklahoma City and Lawton-Ft. Sill from 1997 to 2003. He was a devoted husband and father who loved four things most of all: his wife, his family, the United States Army, and the open road. |
