Huelan Dwayne Bracken

Huelan Dwayne Bracken was born on October 23, 1936 in Ralls, Texas to William Wayne and Maedred Annie Bracken and passed from this life on May 18, 2016 at the age of 79 in Lawton, Oklahoma.

Huelan spent much of his life outdoors, working hard as a youngster in the fields, pulling cotton and other chores, and later in adult life gardening, fishing and hunting. He was an avid deer hunter and killed many bucks and skinned and butchered them, feeding his family with the meat. He taught both sons to hunt and they developed a love of the sport, as did his oldest granddaughter, Jordan.

Huelan grew up in South Texas, graduating from Weslaco High School in 1956 in Weslaco, Texas. He was a star football player and his team won a State Championship in 1956. Playing on that same team was Bobby Lackey, who won a scholarship to play quarterback for the University of Texas.

He had thick black hair which earned him the nickname of "Blackie" throughout his school years.

He moved to Oklahoma following high school graduation to play football on a scholarship for Southeastern State College in Durant, Ok. He loved the sport and became known for his habit of running behind his line, patting his teammate's behinds, yelling encouragement to them!

While a student at Southeastern, he was a member of the College's first trampoline club. They put on shows at Southeastern and in small towns near Durant. He was the clown on the team and kept audiences in laughter watching his antics and scary tricks. He also performed at rodeos as the clown in big baggy pants, who diverted the bulls while their riders escaped from the arena. Huelan became a Christian in his teens and remained a faithful member of the Church of Christ until ill health prevented him from attending services. He was a member of the Northwest Church of Christ in Lawton until his death. After graduating from Southeastern with a Bachelor's Degree, he joined the National Guard. He went to basic training at Ft. Leonardwood, Mo. and attended monthly meetings and summer camps for several years afterward.

While working summers in Healdton, Ok. for an oil company he met and married Wanda Lee McCoy. They began their careers of teaching and coaching, working first in Braman, Ok. and then in Indiahoma, Elgin, and Lawton, Ok. Huelan acted as elementary principal until he was recruited as full-time elementary school Principal in Elgin, where he worked for 16 years.

He drove to Weatherford, Ok. to attend night school and earned his Master's degree from there.

He was a member of the first volunteer fire department in Elgin and never hesitated to work harder than anyone else.

Huelan had a heart of gold and did anything he could to help anyone who asked. He always loved children and they loved him back. He loved his dog Patch and they were inseparable.

Services are planned for Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Whinery Huddleston funeral home. Viewing will be from 9am to 11am with Services starting at 11am. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in the Chapel of Peace Mausoleum. The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions in his names can be made to the NW Church of Christ building fund, Tipton Children's Home in Tipton, Ok. or the Alzheimer's Association.

He is survived by his ex-wife Wanda Bracken of Lawton, Ok; his sons Kevin Bracken of Fletcher and Brent Bracken and his wife Renee of Duncan, Ok; his daughter Erin Ramage of Lawton, Ok; his grandchildren Jordan Lee and her husband Curly of Dallas, Tx., Courtney Edmond of Geronimo, Ok, Jarred Bracken of Duncan and Madison Bracken of Lawton, Ok; his great grandchildren Braelyn Parker of Lawton, Ok and Lyllian Lee of Dallas, Tx.

He was preceded in death by his parents Wayne and Maedred Bracken; his grandson Brett Michael Edmond and by his great granddaughter Angel Sewell. Huelan was much beloved and will be greatly missed.
