John Edward Whetzal

John Edward Whetzal was born August 10, 1933, in Cherokee, OK to Harry Edward and Estella Jane [Adams] Whetzal.

He passed away on January 14 in Lawton, OK at the age of 81.

He graduated from Jet High School.

He entered the Army and served during the Korean War.

After John left the service, he went to Southwestern Oklahoma State University, where he earned his Doctor of Pharmacy.

While in school, he married Arbel Janice Eaton April 4, 1958, in Weatherford, OK.

They moved to Mangum and later Oklahoma City. Eventually, they moved to Apache in 1974, where he purchased Umber Drug and renamed it Apache Drug. He operated it until he retired.

While he was in business, he was a member of several civic organizations, including Rotary, Apache Chamber of Commerce, Apache Fair Board and the Apache School Board. He served as president with each of these organizations and boards. He also served on the Caddo County Health Board.

John enjoyed hunting and fishing. He liked to garden and loved singing at church. He also loved to read. He was very active in the community and well-liked by everyone.

His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities.

He is survived by his wife, Janice, of the home; three daughters, Cecile & husband Mark Mindemann, Lawton, OK; Deidra Henderson, Apache, OK; Kea & husband Stanton Riggs, Roswell, NM; one son, John and wife Lora Whetzal, Centralia, KS; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Frank Whetzal; and his four sisters, Mary Schultz, Margaret Parrott, Ruth Cofield, and Rose Borkowski.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 17 at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church, with Roy Young officiating and assisted by the Rev. Bud Jones.

A private family burial will be held Monday, January 19 at the Fort Sill National Cemetery with Pastor Bill Huguely officiating
