Captain Glenn W. Okerson

Services with full military honors for Captain Glenn W. Okerson, 97, of Norman will be held at 11 a.m. Friday June 18 at the Fort Sill National Cemetery, 2648 NE Jake Dunn Road in Elgin.

Born July 7, 1912 in Avant, the son of Milton Amos and Minnie Nelson Okerson, he died Saturday, May 29, 2010 at the Norman Health plex in Norman.

Captain Okerson attended schools in Avantgraduating from high school in 1930. He later enrolled at the University of Oklahoma obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1934.

Captain Okerson enlisted into the United States Navy on November 25, 1935 in Pensacola, Florida and was later united in marriage to Miss Angel Melissa Morris on June 12, 1940 in Fort Worth, Texas. During his military career Captain Okerson received numerous awards, medals and ribbons including the Bronze Star, two Navy Commendations, two Presidential Unit Citations, American Defense Asiatic-Pacific (5 stars) American Theater, Philippine Liberation and the World War II Victory Medals. He retired as Naval officer and was honorably discharged on July 1, 1966.

After Captain Okerson's retirement from the military he and his family relocated to Boston where he taught at the Wentworth Institute of Technology for 10 years, retiring from that position in 1977.

He and his wife Angel moved back to Oklahoma settling in the Falconhead area where Captain Okerson was very active in civic affairs including serving as president of the Love County Chamber of Commerce and the Falconhead Property Owners' Association. He continued to serve in additional leadership roles and became an active philanthropist founding scholarships to aid in the educational assistance of many students.

Captain Okerson's wife passed away on December 28, 2004 at which time he moved to Norman to be near his family.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Thomas Rigney in 1995, two brothers, Cornelius and John Okerson and one sister, Doris Shelton.

Survivors include his son, Eric Okerson and his wife, Ellen Chamberlain of Cincinnati, two daughters, Patricia Rigney of Norman and Kristin Finley and her husband, Michael of Dallas, two sisters, Jean Marcille of Tulsa and Helen Mason of Huntsville, Alabama, seven grandchildren, Eleana Kyle, Thomas Wade Rigney, Glen Scott Rigney, Casey Finley, Megan Benton, Christopher Okerson and Emily Anne Okerson and nine great-grandchildren.
