Roger Charles Dempsey

Funeral for retired Sgt. 1st Class Roger Charles Dempsey, 77, Lawton, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2016, in Whinery-Huddleston Chapel.

Mr. Dempsey passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 11, 2016. Burial with fully military honors will follow at Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin.

He was born Sept. 30, 1938, in Muskegon, Mich., to Jane and Charles E. Dempsey Sr.

Roger grew up in Muskegon, Mich., and Oak Park, Ill. He graduated from Oak Park High School in 1958 and then enlisted in the Army in 1962. During his military career, he served tours in Germany, Illinois and Kansas before retiring at Fort Sill in 1984.

He fell in love with Rita Conroy of Blackburn, England, while stationed in Oberammergau, Germany, in 1963. They met at a dance while Rita was on holiday. They exchanged addresses and a proposal by letter followed shortly. The relationship of an English girl and a U.S military soldier along with the marriage proposal by mail made the headlines in England. They were married on May 29, 1964, in Oberammergua, Germany.

Following retirement, he sold cars at various dealerships and then worked security.

He always loved family and traveling with his wife. He also enjoyed following his Chicago sports team, loved Elvis Presley and had a special place in his heart for his dogs. During his illness, his grand dog Peyton was by his side.

Prior to illness he enjoyed visiting and volunteering at the Center for Creative Living.

The light of his life was his grandson, Keegan, whom he had enjoyed for the past 15 months.

He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Lawton.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Dempsey, of the home; a brother, Charles E. Dempsey Jr., Naples, Fla.; a son, Paul and wife Stephanie, Yukon; a son, Peter and wife Melissa, Mountain Park; a son, Patrick and wife Ashley, Lawton; a grandson, Keegan Dempsey; a grandchild on the way; and a godson, Michael Lesiwicz, Illinois.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Jane Dempsey, and his sister, Marilyn.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
