Morris Eugene "Gene" Andruss Jr

FALCONHEAD - Morris Eugene "Gene" Andruss Jr. died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at his home in Falconhead, Okla. He was born Oct. 8, 1934, in Enid, Okla., to Morris Eugene and Grace Cantrell Andruss.

Gene grew up in Enid and graduated from Enid High School in 1952, where he was a member of the state championship basketball team. He attended Phillips University on a basketball scholarship, and received his master's degree in education from Northwestern University, Alva.

He started coaching and teaching in Fairview, Okla., in 1959, retiring in 1990, as an administrator for the Putnam City Schools in Oklahoma City. He taught and coached in those 31 years at Cherokee, Pryor, Claremore Jr. College and Oklahoma City University, and was privileged to have coached several all-state athletes. He was named the 1977 All-State Basketball Coach.

In 1960, Gene joined the Oklahoma National Guard and retired as an SMG (E-9) after 341/2 years. He enjoyed several interesting assignments during his military service, including Honduras and the Pentagon.

In 1953, Gene married Mary Martha Byrd in Enid, Okla. They had one son, Tim, who lives with his wife Carla in Oklahoma City, and is a PGA golf professional.

Gene also was a sports official for several years, and upon retirement, became the oldest electrician's apprentice in the state.

His hobby was golf. He played in many retired military golf tournaments throughout the U.S. and had headed a tournament at Falconhead and Winstar golf courses for retirees and friends for five years.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marilyn Agee.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years; son and daughter-in-law; sister, Nancy Washington (Bill) of Pace, Fla.; brother, Mike (Susie) of Yukon, Okla.; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Burial will be at a later date in Fort Sill National Cemetery.
