Lula Dovie [Roper] Adams
Funeral for Lula Dovie Roper Adams, 82, Lawton, will be at 10 a.m. Monday
at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Frankye Johnson, pastor,
officiating.
Mrs. Adams died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at a local hospital.
Burial will be at Fort Sill Post Cemetery under direction of Becker
Funeral Home.
She was born March 16, 1921, in the Consolidated 8 area of Kiowa County, to Joseph J. and Dovie Snow Roper.
She was raised in Snyder by her grandparents, R.C. and M.K. Snow, after the death of her mother.
She attended elementary school and two years of high school in Snyder, where she played in the band.
In 1936, she married Dr. Eugene P. Miles and moved to Rush Springs.
She graduated from high school in Rush Springs in 1939. She attended Oklahoma City University and received her bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1943. While at college, she was in the Glee Club and received many ribbons for horseback riding.
She moved with her husband to Peniland, Texas, and then to Beaumont, Texas, where she assisted him in his clinic for many years. She then moved to Vidor, Texas. She worked at the Vidor Pharmacy and for several doctors until her husband's death in 1947.
She later married Burk Paul Pigg and he died 4 years later.
She moved to Lawton and married Raymond J. Adams July 8, 1972, in Oklahoma City. He died Jan. 3, 1977.
She worked for Sears Credit Department in Beaumont and Lawton more than 15 years before retiring. She also worked for the L.B. Price Manufacturing Company.
She attended Cameron University for four years and received her bachelor of arts degree in elementary education and sociology. She was a substitute teacher for several years.
She joined the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Eta Master Chapter, in 1957 and
held a lifetime membership. She served as president for two years as well
as holding other offices. She joined the B.P.O. Does in 1961, and became a
lifetime member. She served as president in 1966 and 1970, and was
district president in 1981. She held other offices as well as serving on
several Grand Lodge committees. She was public relations chairperson,
historian and district historian. She also was a member of the VFW
Auxiliary No. 5263 for 20 years, and a life member of the Retired
Officer's Club. She served with the Jerry Lewis Telethon for Cancer, the
Retired Service Volunteer Program and Eldercare. She was a den mother for
Cub Scouts, and a sponsor for the Elks Youth Club and the Methodist Youth
Foundation.
Survivors include a son, Eugene "Gene" Miles, Lawton; two aunts; a nephew;
two great-nieces, five great-nephews; a companion, James M. Speed Sr.,
Lawton; and several cousins.
