© Stillwater News Press Stillwater, Oklahoma January 8, 2005 John Pleasant "JP" Acre, 84, of Stillwater, died Tuesday, January 4, 2005. Graveside services will be Monday at 12 p.m. Interment will be at Fort Sill National Cemetery in Lawton under the direction of Strode Funeral Home. He was born in Deadman [Capulen], NM on May 8, 1920 to Rufus and Annie [Hyden] Acre. He married Rena Hatter on June 29, 1945 in Watonga. She preceded him in death on March 25, 2004. Throughout his life he lived in Boca Raton, Fla.; the Panama Canal Zone; Anchorage, Alaska; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Tacoma, Wash.; Moses Lake, Wash.; New Jersey; California; Fountainebleau, France; and Stillwater. He graduated from Fay High School in 1938 as class valedictorian. He attended Hills Business College in Oklahoma City In 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army at Ft. Sill in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He received training as a radar observer in Ft. Scott, Ill., and was assigned as a flight officer in the 6th Night Fighter Squadron initially based in Hawaii. He served in the Pacific Theatre with tours of duty in several areas including Saipan and Iwo Jima. After World War II, he joined the newly formed U.S. Air Force. He married Rena Hatter after a seven~year engagement and she joined him at his duty stations around the world. During his 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, he had a variety of assignments across the globe. He was assigned to Air Defense Command in Colorado; was part of the test crew for the F-94C; and served with NATO forces in Europe. After retiring from the Air Force, he began his second career with H&R Block, first as an office manager in Midwest City; and then in Stillwater in 1965 to serve as area manager. He purchased the Perry H&R Block franchise in 1969, retiting for a scond time in 1980. He was a member of a First Christian Church, a 50~year member of the Stillwater Masonic Lodge, a past Grand Master for the Stillwater Masonic Lodge, a member of the Retired Military Officers Association and retired from the Air Force a Lt. Colonel. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Helen Acre Comer. He is survived by one son, Tom Acre and his wife, Pam, of Westminster, Colo.; two daughters, Karen Acre Kenny and her husband, Todd, of Winnetka, Ill. and Wendy Acre Wittenberg and her husband, James, of Granbury, Texas; three grandchildren, Katy Kenny of Winnetka, Ill. and Derek and Zachary Cook of Granbury, Texas; and three sisters, Margaret Brumfield of Watonga, Ella Keller of Lawton and Fronia George of Eufaula; and a number of nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews, Tom Keller, Mike Keller, Bill Keller, David Hatter, Ken Hatter, Mickey Yates, Don Mueller and his grandnephew, Chris Gray. Memorials can be made to Fay School Alumni, Rt. 1 Box 14, Fay, OK 73646 for the preservation of the Fay School. |
