Memorial service for Harold Dennis, 88, Apache, will be held Friday, February 14 at 11:30 A.M at the First United Methodist Church of Apache with Pastor Don Barnes, First Assembly of Lawton, officiating. Following the memorial service inurnment with full military honors will be held at Ft. Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, OK at 1:00 P.M. under the direction of Crews Funeral Home.
Mr. Dennis passed away Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at his home in Apache with his wife and daughter by his side.
Harold was born on April 14, 1925 in Plainview, TX to Catherine McDonough Dennis and George Dennis. He grew up in Panhandle, TX where he met the woman he would be married to for 70 years, Peggy Lou McNeil. Harold and Peggy were married in Tucson, AZ on Jan. 16, 1944.
At the age of 18 Harold joined the Air Corp, completing courses in Bombardier Training, Flexible Gunnery, Pilot Training, Helicopter Pilot and Air Tactical. He served as bombardier on the Dam Yankee, B-24, during WWII, later to become a pilot in the Air Force. In May of 1957 he went into the Army proudly serving 28 years. He served our country in WWII, Korean and Viet Nam wars. Upon retiring he went on to complete his master's degree at Southwestern OK State University and University of Oklahoma. He taught middle school and high school in Apache and also served 5 years as the Jr High Principal. He retired after 16 years of serving the community and kids of Apache, something he loved.
Harold is survived by his wife, Peggy Lou Dennis of the home; two sons, Kyle Dennis of Arlington, TX, Larry Dennis of Austin, TX; a daughter, Cathy Dennis Schultz, Lawton, OK; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert Dennis and George Dennis, Jr.; a sister Mable Ketchum.
