Graveside services will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd., for Ophelia Briscoe Childress, 85, who passed away May 20, 2004, in Porterville, CA. Rev. Frank Ward will officiate.

Mrs. Childress was born on August 29, 1918, in Coalgate, Oklahoma and resided in Kern County for 45 years. She taught with the Bakersfield City School District Special Education Department for 30 years.

She was a member of the Columbus Street Baptist Church for 45 years. In 1957, she was the Worthy Grand Matron Order of the Eastern Star, Florence Chapter and Caledonia.

Mrs. Childress was preceded in death by her husband, James Alton Childress, they were married in Tucumcari, New Mexico on June 17, 1939.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Evelyn Childress of Porterville; grandchildren, James Russell Childress, Anne Elizabeth Steves, Ethan Andrew Childress, Paul Damon Childress, Cody Lee Childress and Mason Lee Childress; great grandchild, Catherine Childress and niece, Wanda Walker of Portales, New Mexico.

Casketbearers will be Paul Childress, Cody Childress, James Childress, Ethan Childress, Gary Steves and Daniel Moore.

Visitation will be Monday, 9-9:30 a.m.
