Geraldine Patricia Trail Spears Vance

Funeral services for Geraldine Patricia (Trail) Spears Vance, a longtime Coalgate resident, will be held Friday, August 19, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Cottonwood Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Weathers officiating. Family night will Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brown's Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Coalgate Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Brown's Funeral Service of Coalgate.

Mrs. Vance was born July 5, 1928 in Coalgate to Robert Leo and Hattie Kearsley Trail and passed away at the age of 83. She attended elementary at Cottonwood School and Coalgate High School. Geraldine married Joe Spears on September 28, 1946 in Coalgate and later married Wayne Vance on July 30, 1965. Her preceded her in death on January 2, 1982. She worked at the Wrangler plant for 30 years. Geraldine was 43 years old when she learned to drive. She liked homemade ice cream, enjoyed going fishing when she could and loved children, even more, her grandchildren and tried to take care of them all. She became a Christian at the age of 11 and was baptized in the Lehigh Baptist Church. Geraldine was a member of the Cottonwood Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and had a real strong belief in her faith.

She was a member of the OFCE Round Hill Homemakers, was a member of RSVP, a member of WMU's and was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 1198 where she was past District 4 President, Past Auxiliary President and Auxiliary Treasurer fro VFW Post 1198. Geraldine was a strong supporter of our military. Her father served in the Army, son Charles served in the Army, son Eddie served in the Navy, brother Kenneth served in the Army, brother Bob served in the Army, grandson Jessie in the Navy, grandson Dewayne in the Navy, brother-in-law Ross in the Army, Jerry in the Marine Corps (he was killed in Vietnam). She was always ready to support and that is why she was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her sons, Charles Spears and wife Linda of Cottonwood, Carl Spears and wife Zelda of Lehigh, Eddie Spears of Crowder, Billy Joe Spears and wife Nelda of Coalgate and Paul Spears and wife Twala of Coalgate; special nephew Donald Stanberry and wife Tommie of Coalgate; grandchildren, Tammy Bigelow, Charles Dewayne Spears, William Spears, Eddie Joe Dean Spears, Jessie James Spears, Brad Spears and James Spears; great grandchildren, David Bigelow, Brian Bigelow, Jessica Spears, Colten Spears, Hunter Spears, Tylar Spears, Allen Spears, Alexias Spears, Hailey Spears, Donald Spears, and Emalee Spears; brothers, Kenneth Trail of OKC and Bob Trail of Cottonwood, along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear and loved friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Leo and Hattie Trail; her husband Wayne Vance; sister Hazel Stanberry and two daughters, Patricia Spears and an infant daughter.

Casketbearers will Brad Spears, Dwayne Spears, Jessie Spears, James Spears, William Spears, and Donald Stanberry. Honorary bearers will be David Bigelow, Brian Biglelow and Allen Spears.
