Abel Dominguez, 76, of Norman, died at 7:05 PM Friday, June 21, 2013 in the care of his family.

He was born January 27th 1937 in Edinburg, TX to Manuel Dominguez and Elena Riojas-Dominguez. He married Lorraine Stroh on May 21st, 1960 in Dickinson, ND who has preceded him in death.

Mr. Dominguez was also preceded in death by his mother and father Elena and Manuel Dominguez, brothers and sisters, Arthuro Dominguez, Augustine Dominguez, Maria Del Rosario Dominguez, Alberto Dominguez, and Florinda Dominguez-Gamez.

He is survived by his brothers and sisters Amelio Dominguez, Amador Dominguez, Jesusa Lester, Alejandro Dominguez, Elodia Flores, Aurora Redding, Leonila Daniels, and Mary Guadalupe Dominguez. Abel’s children, Cindy and Ledley Barrett of Norman, OK., and Dan and Susan Dominguez of Edmond, OK; his grandchildren Rosita and Matt Fletcher, Jesse Dominguez, and Aliviah Barrett of Norman, OK and Kyle and Blake Dominguez of Edmond, OK.

Abel was a devoted family man and also dedicated to his career throughout his life. Abel served his country for over twenty years in the United States Air Force. While in the military he spent much of his time traveling the United States and overseas working as a radio and radar technician. He retired in 1977 with the rank of Master Sergeant. After he retired from the military, he worked for Norman Regional Hospital as an engineer until he retired in 2000.

After retirement Abel spent much of his time committed to many organizations that were near and dear to his heart. He was a devout Christian and very involved with St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Abel liked to reach out to the community in many ways. In 2006, he became a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed visiting and delivering weekly meals to the elderly and disabled accompanied by his grandson, Jesse. In 2008 he was awarded Volunteer of the Year through the United Way of Norman. He was also an active member in the American Legion Post 88 for several years. He held many positions within the post and in 2010 was nominated and elected Post Commander.

He had many interests when he was not occupied with work or volunteer work. He loved spending time with his family and friends, whether near or far. Abel and his wife were avid gardeners and always on the road visiting family. He was never hesitant to lend a hand to anyone that was in need of help. He led by example and was a father figure to many people other than his own children.

Visitation will be held Monday, June 24, 2013 from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM with Rosary services at 6:00 PM at Havenbrook Funeral Home. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday June 25th, 2013 at 10:30 AM at  St. Joseph’s Catholic Church - 421 E. Acres Norman, OK 73069.  

Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.  Arrangements for Abel and his family were placed in the care of the Vice family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.  Online condolences may be shared at HavenbrookFuneralHome.com.
