Eva Elizabeth (Beth) Gauntt Upchurch, 91, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2012 in Norman, Oklahoma. 

She was born August 17, 1920 at Omaha, Texas to Eli Ray Gauntt and Demmie Parker Gauntt.  Beth began school in Dallas, Texas, then to Cookville, Texas graduating at Mt. Vernon, Texas.  She married Stanley B. Upchurch on May 3, 1941 in Mt. Vernon, Texas.  Their first home was San Antonio, Texas where Stan served in the United States Army Air Corp.  Then she moved to Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey until February 1943 when Stan went to India.

She was in Ardmore, OK until October 1945 moving to New Jersey again.  From there she lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  (Stan serving with the Joint Brazil United States Military Commission and U.S. Embassy).  In September 1948, she moved back to New Jersey.  From there she lived in Tokyo, Japan then in New York where she lived until another move took her to Atlanta, Georgia.  In New York, she served as Deacon in the First Baptist Church, Freeport, Long Island.  She taught school in Atlanta, GA and Sunday School, also.  Upon her husband's retirement from the Army, she moved to Norman, Oklahoma.  Beth taught in Norman Public Schools for 26 years. She served as President of the Professional Educators of Norman and was active on local and state committees of education. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Norman where she taught Sunday School and directed the College Department.  She was currently a member of NorthHaven Church.

She is survived by a son, Reverend Stanley Ray Upchurch and his wife Carol; granddaughter, Kimberly Shields and her husband Weston (who is Beth's Godson);  two grandsons, Jordan Ray and Jace Harrison; a niece, Eva Lou Hagelstein and her husband Herman; a great niece, Laura Nighorn and her husband Dave; a great nephew, Paul Hagelstein and his wife Kimberly; a nephew, Larry Alton Green and his wife Margie; a great nephew, Nathan Green and his wife Jamie; great niece, Kayte; five great great nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to Norman Public School Foundation, 131 S. Flood, Norman, OK, 73069 or NorthHaven Church, 4600 36th Ave. NW, Norman, OK 73072.

Visitation will be held 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Monday, January 16, 2012 at Havenbrook Funeral Home. 

Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 17, 2012 in the Chapel of the Havenbrook Funeral Home with interment following in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. 

Arrangements for Beth and her family were placed in the care of the Vice Family at Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.
