Funeral services for Mr. Robert Lee “Bob” Peterson, age 64, of Norman, will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, November 19, 2010 in The Chapel of the Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook Street in Norman.

Bob was born October 31, 1946 in Grandfield, Oklahoma the son of Lloyd Robert and Lola Mae (Merritt) Peterson.  He passed away early Monday morning, November 15, 2010 at his home.

He attended Norman Public Schools before being drafted into the United States Military.   After serving a brief time in the United States Army, Bob returned to Norman and married the love of his life, Karen Kelly in May of 1981 in Chickasha.
Bob and Karen made their life in Norman, where Bob was employed as the Director of the Animal Shelter for the City of Norman.  He retired from the the City of Norman in 1990, ending a career than spanned more than 28 years.
Bob was a private man, focusing on his relationships with his family.  He loved spending time with his wife, and their three sons, Thad, Jason and Kyle.  His two grandchildren, Ashlyn and Easton, were the absolute apple of his eye.  Nothing else he did brought him as much joy as spending time with his family.  Bob also had a passion for the outdoors and caring for everything that lived there.  He was  especially fond of reptiles, caring for all types of venomous snakes, importing and exporting them all over the world.  From engaging in this hobby, Bob developed the nickname, “The Snake Man.”  Bob was knowledgeable in herpetology and understood the importance of reptiles in our world.     He understood how to appreciate an Oklahoma sunset,  the natural beauty of flowers growing wild in the country and the serenity of the peaceful morning dew.   He had a big heart for others, making sure that every child had a birthday and Christmas present who may not have had one otherwise.
He enjoyed volunteering at his sons' school exhibits and his church.  Bob loved The Lord, and valued the relationship he had with Him.  He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church of Bethel.

Survivors include his wife, Karen of the home; his three sons; Thad Peterson and his wife, Casey of Norman; Jason Peterson and his wife, Jamie of Norman; and Kyle Peterson and his fiancee', Rachel of Norman; two grandchildren, Ashlyn and Easton Peterson; one brother, Bennie Peterson and his wife, Karen of Norman; and three sisters; Peggy Fowler and her husband, Leo of Madill, OK; Gloria Witt and her husband, Robert of Norman; Norma Jackson and her husband, Ronnie of Norman; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at the Havenbrook Funeral Home.

The Peterson family wishes to express their appreciation to Oklahoma Respiratory Care of Norman.
