John Marshall Gettys passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2015. He was 70 years old.

Born on Oct. 1, 1944, Marshall was an avid collector, a passion that started early in life with railroad lanterns. Over the years his collection grew to include a diverse array of items: from restaurant-style coffee mugs to log cabin-shaped tins used to package maple syrup, and wood-cut prints to 19th century pottery. His greatest passion was collecting Native American baskets, specializing in baskets of the Southeast. Marshall worked as an archaeologist for the Oklahoma Historical Society in the State Historic Preservation Office. As an archaeologist, historian and collector, Marshall was fascinated about the stories behind the objects he collected. After retiring from the OHS, Marshall worked for FEMA, using his deployments in various areas around the country to enjoy local cuisine, discover the area’s antique stores, and occasionally bring home stray cats. Marshall was an expert in Southeast Native American basketry, and he published articles, museum catalogs and book chapters. He also developed and curated numerous exhibits featuring Native American art.

Marshall was preceded in death by his father, Chester W. Gettys, and mother, Sara Marshall James Gettys.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Gettys, daughters Sara Gettys and Diana GettysBourke, daughter-in-law Jeni GettysBourke, granddaughter Alice GettysBourke and cats Jeep, Coco, Niles, Ike and Jazz Purr.

Services will be held at Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman at 10 am on Friday. Visitation will be from 6-8pm Thursday night. Donations can be made in Marshall’s name to The Museum of the Red River, 812 E. Lincoln Rd., Idabel, OK 74745.
